Basic Function
***NOTE: This is a temporary, part-time position with no benefits. Hours may vary, 20-30 hours per week. Must be able to work evenings and weekends***
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator and Assistant Aquatics Coordinator, Lead Lifeguards will act as the shift supervisor when management is not on duty, will work to prevent accidents and injuries in their area of responsibility, and respond to any level of injury or incident around the facility. Lead Lifeguards may take the lead role during rentals and after hour events. This work involves a high volume of public contact and requires excellent communication and human-relations skills
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Monitor activities at the pool to prevent accidents.
  2. Assist in the on-boarding and training of new lifeguards.
  3. Ensure the safety and well-being of members at all times by enforcing rules and regulations.
  4. In cooperation with the maintenance staff, they will monitor pool facilities for potential hazards or unsafe conditions.
  5. Ensure the pools, steam room, sauna, cabanas, and locker rooms are maintained in a clean and sanitary condition, and perform related work, as required.
  6. Educate patrons and staff on safe behaviors.
  7. Perform appropriate rescue to aid swimmers in distress.
  8. Provide first aid as needed.
  9. Follow emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency.
  10. Complete walkthroughs of the aquatic area and locker rooms to ensure cleanliness and safe conditions.
  11. Inspect rescue equipment and first aid supplies.
  12. Plan and organize top quality swim instruction for all students.
  13. Provide excellent customer service to all members and guests using the facility.
  14. Assume responsibility for ensuring policies and procedures are being followed and performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  15. Fill out all required reports completely and legibly.
  16. Communicate regularly and consistently with the Aquatics Coordinator and Assistant Aquatics Coordinator.
  17. Model excellent work ethic.
  18. Must be able to perform under high stress situations and/or when confronted with an emergency.
  19. Use Various types of tools and equipment including but not limited to ladders, snow blowers, carpet vacuum, wet and dry vacuum, steam cleaner, floor mops, floor care machines, brooms, and various cleaning materials.
  20. May be required to work long hours (12 -14 hours) periodically on days of special events.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
2 Years of experience as Lifeguard.
2 Years of experience as a team leader in any capacity (preferred).
Qualifications
Current American Red Cross Certifications (or equivalent)
  • Lifeguard Training
  • First Aid
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Water Safety Instructor (preferred, but not required)
  • Lifeguard Instructor (preferred, but not required)

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  1. Lifeguard methods and techniques.
  2. CPR/AED and First Aid.
  3. Effective safety standards and precautions related to swimming and the responsibilities of a lifeguard.
  4. Pool operation chemicals such as Chemtrol, Taylor water testing kit, and facility maintenance policies and procedures.

Ability to:
  1. Conduct oneself in a professional manner.
  2. Skillfully apply lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques.
  3. Teach swim lessons to children and adults.
  4. Remain calm in any emergency situation.
  5. Make independent judgments and decisions following policy and procedures.
  6. Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  7. Positively and effectively interact with diverse individuals to accomplish a common goal.
  8. Problem solve.
  9. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  10. Receive direction and follow oral and written instructions.
  11. Lift up to 50 pounds.
  12. Maintain 20/40 vision; use of corrective lens is acceptable.
  13. Coordinate hands and eyes while using various types of equipment.
  14. Handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.
  15. Talk and/or hear (talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

Environmental Conditions/Physical Effort:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. May be exposed to heat, cold, dry, wet, odors, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, mold and mildew, bodily fluids, or intense light. Must be physically able to perform frequent building walk-throughs, including climbing stairs. Perform heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May occasionally be required to carry parcels or supplies up to 75 pounds and climb ladder for event building decoration.
