Pay Range: $26.24/hr - $34.37/hr
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Lab Assistant oversees specimen collection and referral during their shift. They provide leadership for Laboratory Assistants by directing work assignments on their assigned shift. They are responsible for planning, organizing, and prioritizing specimen collection and other tasks for staff on their shift. They provide guidance and direction to lab assistants on their shift when needed. They communicate and collaborate with clinical staff in other departments in order to address immediate issues and achieve the goals of quality patient-centered care. They are responsible for addressing immediate staffing needs that may arise due to illness or increased workload. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with all departmental and organizational policies and procedures as they apply to specimen collection and specimen processing. They continuously work at establishing and maintaining a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with coworkers in the laboratory and throughout the organization, in keeping with the core values of Enloe Medical Center. The Lead Lab Assistant communicates problems and needs to the Tech-in-charge on their shift.
The Lead Lab Assistant will perform the duties of a Lab Assistant III. They perform designated specimen processing functions in the clinical laboratory. They collect blood samples from patients for laboratory testing. They routinely perform venipuncture and also perform arterial puncture when ordered. The Lead Lab Assistant responds to and collects blood samples on code and trauma activations. The Lead Lab Assistant processes arterial blood gas samples on a pre-calibrated, automated blood gas analyzer. Specimen processing assignments may include any of the following: plating, staining and sub-culturing specimens for microbiological testing; aliquoting, requisitioning, and packaging samples being sent out to reference labs; assisting in the collection of bone marrow biopsies.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
Required:
A minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience in a hospital setting, with responsibilities relevant to the specimen processing and leadership duties described in the position summary.

Current Phlebotomy Certificate CPT II issued by the California Department of Public Health

Must be able to follow instructions, work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment. Must be aware of chemical hygiene protocols, and handling requirements of biohazard materials. Must know and follow all universal precautions and be familiar with blood drawing safety devices. Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, and be able to direct coworkers using a respectful and supportive approach. Must be capable of working collaboratively, with an attitude of helpful assistance, general responsiveness, and awareness of the needs of others.
