Job Description / Essential Elements:
LODI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: LEAD GROUNDSKEEPER BASIC FUNCTION: Plan, assign, inspect and participate in the grounds maintenance activities for the District; perform a variety of groundskeeping work; train and provide work direction to assigned staff. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: E=Essential Duty Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class. Assign, monitor and inspect the work of Groundskeepers at various schools and sites throughout the District; participate in the grounds maintenance activities for the District; perform a variety of groundskeeping work. E Work from plans and sketches in carrying out landscape projects. E Purchase tools, parts, equipment, plant material, soil and supplies; estimate and receive bids from contractors for new installation and renovation of landscape areas, maintenance, removal of and preventive maintenance of trees on school sites. E Train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned staff; oversee time cards for assigned staff; schedule vacation for employees; inspect and oversee grounds maintenance work and special projects to assure compliance with established procedures; conduct training sessions for new and current employees related to equipment operations, safety, herbicide, pesticide and rodent abatement procedures; participate in interviewing and selection of personnel. E Schedule and oversee normal preventive Maintenance and repair of equipment. E Oversee the removal and pruning of trees, stumps, shrubs and hedges. E Oversee the safe application of approved herbicides and pesticides; oversee the removal of rodents and other pests. E Estimate grounds maintenance tasks and landscape projects. E Plant and prune trees, grass and shrubs; plan and oversee the installation of new plant material. E Water lawns, trees and shrubs, both by turning on sprinkler systems and manually hauling hose and sprinkler heads to proper areas. E Rake leaves and lawns; hoe for control of weeds. E Sweep sidewalks, pick up rubbish and paper and perform general grounds cleaning. E Prepare track and playing fields for athletic events. E Spray herbicides and pesticides. E Operate a variety of heavy and light grounds maintenance equipment including power mowers, edgers, sprayers, backhoes, tractors, loaders, dump truck, aerial lifts, towing equipment, chippers and other equipment; perform minor repair of grounds tools and equipment; maintain hoses, supplies, tools and equipment in proper condition. E Inspect, service, repair and assist in installing sprinkler systems. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Principles and practices of proper care and maintenance of trees, lawns and shrubs. Safe operation of power equipment, mowers, chain saws, edgers, hedge trimmers, string trimmers and associated grounds care equipment. Principles of training and providing work direction. Methods of propagating, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, shrubs, trees and lawns. Soil preparation for planting. Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities. Methods and materials used in controlling pests, insects and weeds. Herbicides and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance. Operation of various manual and automatic sprinkler systems. Basic computer operation. Proper lifting techniques. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. ABILITY TO: Utilize and maintain a variety of hand and power tools used in groundskeeping work. Prioritize and schedule work. Train and provide work direction to others. Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to water management, safety regulations and related criteria. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Plan, organize and assign the work of crews working at various locations. Maintain routine records, logs and forms. Perform specialized groundskeeping duties in the care and maintenance of District grounds. Perform heavy manual labor. Operate a computer terminal to enter data, maintain records and generate reports. Make necessary purchases in accordance with District policy. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects and other pests. Operate, service and make minor repairs on equipment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent and increasingly responsible grounds maintenance experience. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California driver's license. Obtain and maintain appropriate certificate for pesticide use as required by the County Agricultural Commissioner. Persons employed in this classification on April 15, 1998, are encouraged to obtain and maintain a valid Class A driver's license. All subsequent hires in a District-based Lead Groundskeeper position shall be required to obtain by the completion of the probation period, a Class A driver's license as a condition of continued employment. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Adverse weather conditions. Exposure to pollen, noise, dust and fumes. Incumbents in this position may be required to work weekend and evenings and respond to emergency calls. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds maintenance tools and equipment. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Walking over rough and uneven surfaces. Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects. Climbing ladders to trim trees. HAZARDS: Working at heights. Working around or with equipment having moving parts. Board Approved 11/2/99

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS / CERTIFICATES:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License. Obtain and maintain appropriate certificate for pesticide use as required by the County Agricultural Commissioner. The successful applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment physical examination. Cost of the exam will be borne by the District. A pre-employment drug screening will also be administered. If selected for the position, out-of-district applicants must be T.B. tested and fingerprinted. A practical skills test may be administered at the time of interview.
