Job description

Time base: Full time, 100%, 12 months

Location: Remote - EDvance operates on a PST daily schedule during regular business hours with adjustments for evening teaching; occasional in-person meetings and events

Type of position: Exempt

Level of Position: Lead Faculty

Reports to: Associate Vice President of Early Childhood Studies

As a Faculty Member with a specialization in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), you will be shaping the academic success of our adult English learners. We are seeking an experienced and dedicated individual who not only possesses expertise in TESOL but also has the ability to apply TESOL in the disciplines, in this case Early Childhood Education. In this role, you will lead the design and development of our TESOL program, including teaching and training faculty in supporting adult English learners. You will also incorporate your knowledge of TESOL to ensure language and literacy skills are integrated with early childhood education content and skills. Additionally, this position involves creating and implementing language assessments, facilitating placements, and overseeing and supporting writing coaches.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching (40%-80%)

  • Instruct two to four courses per semester.
  • Apply writing to learn and learning to write approaches to achieve writing development and content mastery
  • Cultivate and maintain a supportive and inclusive learning environment that fosters student engagement and success.
  • Employ innovative TESOL teaching methods and leverage current technologies to promote English language development.
  • Collaborate with the Student Support team and faculty to identify and support students as needed

Curriculum Development (0-20%)

  • Lead the design and development of a comprehensive TESOL sequence tailored to the needs of adult English learners, integrating principles from Early Childhood Education to create an effective and engaging curriculum.
  • Create and administer assessments to determine language proficiency, writing proficiency, and appropriate placement of students, considering the developmental aspects influenced by early childhood education.
  • Collaborate closely with admissions to ensure students are placed in appropriate writing courses, taking into account their unique language development needs.
  • Collaborate closely with consultants in the design and development of curriculum
  • Identify adaptive technologies and strategies to ensure student success.

Faculty Training and Support (10-20%)

  • Create opportunities to train ECS faculty in TESOL approaches to support writing development, community of reflective practice (CORP) courses, and content courses via Faculty Onboarding and Faculty Learning Community
  • Provide training and professional development opportunities for faculty and adjuncts, emphasizing the importance of using TESOL strategies across the curriculum.
  • Support writing coaches in assisting students in their writing development and ECS skill development and content mastery
  • Develop resources and strategies to enhance the effectiveness of writing coaches

Institutional Service (20%)

  • Attend department and institutional meetings to address program quality, curriculum development, policy review and approval, and strategic planning efforts.
  • Participate in and serve on the Academic Affairs Committee, Curriculum Committee, and other committees as necessary.
  • Participate in accreditation activities as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or a related field with a TESL emphasis, with a demonstrated ability to teach within a discipline.
  • Six (6) years of experience as adjunct or full time faculty in post-secondary education with demonstrated expertise in designing and developing learning experiences for college students.
  • In-depth understanding of writing in the disciplines with a demonstrated ability to teach English in a disciplinary context.
  • Experience working with adult English language learners and ability to serve all students equitably regardless of age, gender, culture, academic ability, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to train and support faculty and adjuncts in effective writing instruction in disciplinary content and skills
  • Proficiency in assessment development and placement strategies, with consideration of early childhood developmental aspects.
  • Demonstrated understanding of college level English proficiency assessments, placement processes, and TESOL program development and implementation

Desired Qualifications:

  • Early Childhood Education experience or understanding of disciplinary content knowledge and skills.
  • Proficiency using Canvas, Zoom, GoReact, Turnitin, ReadSpeaker, and Google Workspace
  • Experience working with state-subsidized preschools, Head Start programs, or Title V centers
