The Senior Electronic Hardware Engineer will manage a small team of engineers and is responsible for hardware development for the electronic systems on our integrated powertrain. The successful candidate will lead all aspects of solution delivery including specification, design, prototyping, testing, certification, and manufacture. There are two primary areas of hardware electronics in our powertrain, the multiphase inverter/motor controller, and the battery management system and control unit. Candidates must have experience in at least one of those two product designs. The role requires experience and expertise in the following areas: hardware and firmware development for motor controllers or high voltage battery systems for safety critical applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a small team of engineers and be a technical leader in the electronics hardware design discipline within the organization
  • Develop lightweight, multiphase inverters for aerospace applications from 600kW – 1 MW – primarily driving the hardware implementation OR
  • Develop battery management and battery control unit hardware electronics for aerospace applications, from low voltage sensing and control to high voltage power delivery – primarily driving the hardware implementation.
  • Design, test, and validate power electronics and high voltage battery electronics circuits, including hardware and software, in lab tests and in the field.
  • Perform circuit and/or system design and integration at circuit board, enclosure, and system level.
  • Setup and testing of motor/generator/inverter prototypes and high voltage battery management and control circuit prototypes including developing test procedures, measurement, and reporting.
  • Interfacing hardware components including control systems, actuators, voltage and current sensors, power analyzers, encoders and vehicle management units.
  • Modelling using Matlab/Simulink and PCB layouts with Altium or other similar tools.
  • Define requirements for motor control software/firmware and/or battery management unit software/firmware.
  • Hardware design for certification in airborne systems according to DO-254 and testing according to DO-160G or automotive safety systems to ISO26262.
  • Develop and support regulatory, certification and manufacturing plans for magniX products.
  • Repair and review technical documentation for Electronic Hardware systems designs, specifications, test plans and reports.
  • Develop and implement best practices in hardware reliability engineering.

Requirements

  • BS degree or MS degree in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, power electronics, or related discipline with at least 7 years of related experience.
  • Significant mobile motor controller/inverter product design (full lifecycle) experience, ideally in the 600kW+ power range OR
  • Significant high voltage battery management system product design (full lifecycle), particularly for traction applications
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of power semiconductor devices in high voltage (>400V) power electronics products (Si MOSFET, Si IGBT, and SiC)
  • Knowledge of EMI filter design and DC/DC converters
  • Knowledge of voltage insulation testing and safety
  • Experience in product development for aerospace or high voltage electric vehicle batteries is an advantage.
  • Experience with airborne systems certification requirements, guidelines, and testing (FAR Part 23 & 33, ASTM F39 & F44, RTCA DO-160G, DO-178C, DO-254), is preferred. Alternatively, experience with ISO26262 is acceptable.
  • EMI/EMC compliance testing and power electronics or high voltage electronics certification
  • Technical writing skills to create engineering documentation within a certification and quality framework.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills and leading small teams of engineers.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team in the achievement of common goals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in electric propulsion.
