The role of the Lead Cashier is to supervise, train and equip all cashiers on proper cash handling and register procedures, and to ensure its consistency and completion. Also, they are to ensure excellent customer service while customers are paying and leaving the store. This is a leadership role that will include many tasks, but ultimately the Lead Cashier is responsible for the register team and area. Each day it is a requirement to load all the cash in the drawers, clean the registers, be aware of changes to the POS screen, and post drawers at the end of the day. It is also the responsibility of the Lead Cashier to communicate and post weekly sales so that all cashiers are aware and knowledgeable. The Lead Cashier is often the first to come in and the last to leave.
The Lead Cashier must be able to communicate with the retail manager and store leadership if there is a need in staffing or scheduling to cover the department daily. This position is critical for communication with customers as well as managers and team members throughout the store. Communicating proper ticket writing procedures and legibility with department managers must be done promptly and is necessary so that customers are charged accurately. This position has an impact on the entire company. Your performance is a result of your team’s performance. The following are tasks and responsibilities to be completed by the Lead Cashier. They include but are not limited to:
- Offering excellent customer service
- Maintaining thorough cash handling processes
- Efficiently running a cash register
- Training cashiers on how to run the POS system, cash handling procedures, and proper paperwork handling
- Ensure customers are handled with a positive and willing attitude from the greeting, to checking out and ultimately to leaving the parking lot
- Answer phones, update answering machine, pass out messages from previous night
- Returns
- House charges
- Lunch break scheduling
- Keep cashiers on task, delegate tasks
- Daily worklist
- Discuss staffing with retail manager including points of success but also points of concern
- Ability to send people home upon checking with the retail manager
- Check greenhouse box for delivery tickets daily and deliver to greenhouse office
- Be aware and knowledgeable of weekly ads- ensure it all rings up correctly and product has correct signagePaging and coordinating carryout on every transaction
- Dealing with customer issues that arise which are beyond a cashier’s ability
- Able to work in all weather types and potentially the extremes; wet and cold, or hot and dry.
- Able to stand and walk on their feet for multiple hours at a time with minimal breaks.
- Can comfortably lift 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day.
- Comfortable around a high paced setting involving many people, and in a team type situation.
- Willingness to be coached in order to excel in one's position.
- Willingness to learn about our products we offer to our customers.
- Willingness to move around and to fill in any other areas where team member support is needed, and as directed by leadership.
