Job Description
Our Lead Carpenter position requires carpentry skills, construction, installation and dismantling of exhibit/event structures and fixtures and the ability to supervise and train other carpenters. We design, build and stage entire projects and components, to include final assembly and installation.
This position also requires some travel.
Requirements
Tool Skills:
- Table saws/Miter saw
- Knowledge of proper blade use for cutting a variety of materials
- Ability to perform all functions of saw resulting in extremely accurate cuts
- Hand held routers
- Knowledge of router bits used for a variety of functions
- Extensive knowledge and willingness to use a wide variety of shop tools including but not limited to: drill press, shaper, planer, wide belt sander, band saw, jigsaw, circular saw, nail guns and drills
Comprehension:
- Read and comprehend from applicable blueprints, sketches, plans and specifications and complex drawings
- Working knowledge of products used :
- Plywood
- Laminate
- Veneer
- Aluminum extrusions
- MDF
- Must be able to work with Detailers to verify accuracy of drawings before sending to CNC
- Willingness to do a complete take off from drawings without supervision
- Able to adjust drawings on-the-fly in order to maximize efficiency
Building Skills:
- Demonstrates skills required to carry projects from start to finish
- Able to assemble custom made parts as well as CNC parts in the allotted time frame
- Well versed in the laminating process
- Compound angles
- Edge banding
- Spray and roll on glue applications
- Prep work for finishing
- Possess mechanical skills to determine what kind of hardware to use for any unique applications
- Willing to be a lead on installation of varying levels of complexity
- Able to travel
- Scribing, leveling, trim, lighting and AV hookup
- Work off client punch list to complete in timely manner
- Knowledge of exhibit and scenic carpentry
Education/Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Three to five years of carpentry experience in custom scenic and/or exhibit building with at least one of those years in a leadership role.
Certificates and Licenses
Valid Forklift License a plus. Forklift training and certification available.
Language Ability
Ability to write simple correspondence. Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, customers and other employees of the organization.
Math Ability
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
