Job Description



The High School Director of School Improvement assists the Executive Principal in overseeing the "Academies of Alexandria City High School," and the connected high school network with a focus on School Improvement, i.e. CSIP implementation; testing/assessment supervision; special education oversight; MTSS implementation and alignment, and school leadership support. The candidate will collaborate with the executive principal, division leadership, and building administrators to ensure cross-campus compliance with division, state, and federal guidelines pertaining to student support processes, i.e. accountability and specialized instruction. The Director of School Improvement analyzes data; conducts school-wide programmatic audits and performs needs assessments to identify school-wide goals and steps for improvement. The position makes recommendations for resources and services that support both the general education program, as well as students with disabilities.

This job reports to the Executive Principal.

Qualifications



Education: Master's degree in a job related area

Certificates & Licenses: A valid Virginia Department of Education license, which must include a PreK-12 Administration and Supervision endorsement or eligibility to obtain a license with the required endorsement within ninety (90) days of the initial hire date, is required.

Experience



  • Senior level administrative experience leading a large high school in a socio-economically and culturally diverse environment
  • Experience building strategic partnerships and/or relationships with local community leaders and community-based organizations to connect students with community and career exploratory opportunities
  • Knowledgeable of School Improvement efforts that result in student achievement gains
  • Knowledgeable of and familiarity with special education law, state and federal compliance
  • Experience leading school-wide testing initiatives; organizing staff, disaggregating data, and communicating action-items in a fast paced, high-need environment
  • Demonstrated expertise reviewing and providing feedback to special education staff and parents related to special education services or processes; knowledge of special education requirements related to parental consent, service provision, discipline and progress monitoring in compliance with local, state and federal laws
  • Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based curriculum design, assessment, and project-based instructional practices, as well as the ability to lead teams in improvement efforts related to instructional best practices
  • Proven track record of leading, developing, and implementing educational programing, including professional development in evidence based best-practices for general and special education student populations that result in student achievement
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, families, and community members from diverse and multicultural environments
  • Ability to successfully communicate and collaborate with district and city personnel, i.e. Department of Specialized Instruction, Teaching Learning and Leadership, Safety and Security, and Accountability/School Improvement
  • Demonstrated record for implementing programs and/or initiatives that result in all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, and background, flourishing and achieving



Essential Functions




  • Reinforces the vision, mission, and priorities of ACPS and the high school; and ensures that all departments, including non-academic departments, such as, special education, IA, and long-term EL, are aligned with the school's vision and mission
  • Collaborates with the high school's executive principal and executive administrative team to ensure that all students have access to a rigorous, engaging, authentic, and a personalized learning environment
  • Participates in a variety of high-level, executive meetings with, and when necessary on behalf of, the executive principal for the purpose of strategic planning and organizational efforts for School Improvement and specialized instruction efforts
  • Provides recommendations to the executive principal regarding resource expenditures and staffing allocation necessary to support School Improvement efforts
  • Ensures the School Improvement process is implemented in a timely and efficient manner across the entire connected high school network
  • Facilitates effective problem solving and project management process that includes ongoing collaboration with other ACHS executive administrative team members, with specific focus on ensuring effective building operations; implementation of School Improvement essential actions; and that students' IEPs (along with student services and accommodations) are in compliance with federal and state law
  • Assists the high school's executive principal and the Office of Specialized Instruction in providing information and data required to develop administrative reports and supports the high school's special education leadership, e.g. department leads, accountability specialist, case managers, and deans of students/academy principals, with providing special education leadership and oversight
  • Responds to inquiries if requested by school administration and Central Office and other community contacts to provide information and/or direction concerning School Improvement and special education departments; works with the state and central office before, during and after state audits
  • Oversees areas critical to the efficient running of a school day including scheduling, transportation, and supervision of instructional assistants and teachers within the CityWide program.
  • Evaluates a cross-section of administrators, instructional, and support staff; oversees the testing team; accountability specialist; lead teacher(s) for special education
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the high school
