Job Summary 

 

As a quasi-governmental entity, this NJEDA internship is designed to prepare students for a fast-paced business environment while also offering experience working within the compliance functions of a governmental structure. The successful candidate for this competitive opportunity will gain an in-depth insight into the legal compliance activities surrounding the facilitative role of State government in expanding financial sources through assignments and research. 

 

This is a paid internship position intended for current graduate students enrolled in an accredited Law School on a full or part time basis.  The ideal Legal Compliance intern candidate has strong written and verbal communication as well as strong analytical skills and an interest in legal and regulatory compliance. The internship may be for the school year, summer, or both depending on the needs of the Authority and the availability of the candidate. The potential journey beyond this internship may include a post-graduation/pre-bar exam passage position with the Legal Compliance departments of the Authority. 

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

 

  • Conducts research as assigned by the Legal Compliance Department staff to support the Authority's compliance with applicable Federal and State Laws, including statutes, regulations, Executive Orders and circulars, and NJEDA's policies and procedures. 
  • Drafts memoranda, communications and other documents as reference and documentation for the Authority to support compliance efforts across the organization. 
  • Assist in gathering, preparing and analyzing requested documentation as part of program risk assessments. 
  • Participate in calls, meetings, and events with internal and external stakeholders including program managers, federal agencies (i.e., US Treasury), the NJ Office of the Attorney General, outside counsel, etc., when applicable.  
  • Works on updates to EDA's public website and its internal sites and systems to support the Authority's Legal Compliance goals. 
  • Promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative, and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff, and external customers.  
  • Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned. 
Qualifications

 

Required Skills and Abilities 

 

  • Research skills, including the ability to analyze laws, regulations, policies, procedures and other data, prepare legal memoranda, data visualization materials and other relevant documentation for the internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Interest in the work of the NJEDA and its mission regarding economic development, as well as assisting with audits, researching federal regulatory compliance, and analyzing fraud. 
  • Knowledge of or ability to read, understand and communicate in layperson's terms about legislation,  compliance, and regulatory matters.  
  • Must possess advanced analytical, critical thinking, research and information technology skills. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with individuals at all levels and from diverse backgrounds; proficient in grammar, spelling and editing; and foster communications with business professionals and EDA staff. 
  • Ability to prioritize workload, must be highly organized, detail-oriented, handle various tasks simultaneously and work independently within limited time constrains. 
  • Ability to analyze data, prepare data visualization materials and other relevant documentation for leaders. 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal effectively and diplomatically with business professionals and EDA staff. 
  • Demonstrates respectful behavior and promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff and external customers.  
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the NJEDA and its mission, as well as economic development, finance, and/or compliance 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including MS Teams, Zoom, OneDrive, SharePoint, Excel, Word, and Adobe Acrobat Pro, and the ability to learn new software packages. 
  • Proficiency in using Lexis for legal research. 

 

Required Qualifications 

 

Education and Experience Requirements 

  • Bachelor's degree required.  
  • Enrollment in an accredited Law School required. Second or Third-year law student preferred.
