Responsibilities

Schedule and plan the agency's annual training plan, ensure training complies with CJSTC requirements and aligns with department policies, laws, and best practices. Develop lesson plans and conduct in-service training to instruct officers and employees on various Law Enforcement and public safety topics, including firearms, defensive tactics, de-escalation, 21st Century Policing, search and seizure, and legal procedures. Emphasize community-oriented policing strategies during training to foster positive relationships between officers and their communities.

Supervise department-designated adjunct training officers responsible for conducting training sessions and provide guidance, support, and evaluations to adjunct training officers to ensure they maintain required CJSTC instructor training standards. Incorporate technology simulation and scenario-based training to enhance realism and effectiveness during specialized training for emergency situations, such as active shooter scenarios and mental health crisis intervention and de-escalation.

Maintain comprehensive records of training sessions, attendance, evaluations, and performance outcomes. Ensure accurate documentation of training hours and certifications. Proficient in the use of FDLE ATMS. Ensure department training activities adhere to policies, accreditation standards, and legal requirements, addressing any deviations promptly and appropriately to the chain of command.

Stay current with changes in laws, regulations, and legal precedents related to Law Enforcement. Provide updates to employees and ensure training materials and programs meet legal compliance. Reinforce the importance of ethics, integrity, and professionalism among officers during training and address issues related to bias and discrimination. Ensure that officers receive comprehensive training on the appropriate use of force, emphasizing de-escalation and non-lethal methods whenever possible.

Continuously evaluate and enhance the training programs based on feedback, evolving best practices, and emerging threats or challenges in Law Enforcement. Collaborate with other Law Enforcement agencies, training academies, and community organizations to share resources, expertise, and best practices in training. Assist in developing and reviewing department policies and procedures related to training, and encourage officers to pursue ongoing professional development opportunities, including advanced training, certifications, and specialized courses.

Qualifications

High school diploma and five years of sworn Law Enforcement experience. At least two years must have been with the University.

A valid State of Florida or Georgia driver’s license or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Be certified as a Law Enforcement officer pursuant to Chapter 943, Florida Statutes; have attained regular status in their current or a previous certified Law Enforcement classification with the University.

Anticipated Salary Range

Salary is expected to be in the low to mid $80,000 range, commensurate with experience, education, and in agreement with the FSUPD CBA.
