A Non-Profit Membership Organization is looking for a Fall full-time Government Affairs legal/policy intern to work within the Center's Washington, DC Office.
General position overview:
The DC office is a hub of legal activity, with attorneys working on cutting-edge environmental law issues. Legal/policy interns are likely to work on projects concerning endangered species, public lands and pollution issues, focusing primarily on congressional legislation and administrative regulatory proposals. This position is located in Washington, D.C., although some staff are currently working remotely.
Main duties:
  • Focus primarily on analyzing federal and state legislation relating to endangered species, public lands and pollution;
  • Review administrative regulations and other policy proposals;
  • Draft policy comments and assisting with other Government Affairs program priorities;
  • Track current legislation in Congress relating to the Endangered Species Act, public-land laws, National Environmental Policy Act and Clean Air Act, with opportunities to attend meetings with agency and congressional staff.

Areas in which skills and experience will be gained:
Clerks will gain experience in environmental advocacy, drawing on litigation, science, media, and grassroots organizing strategies to fight for the environment.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Must be a law student who has completed their second or third year of law school, or a student pursuing their LLMs to be eligible;
  • Strong legal research and writing skills;
  • Creative, good-humored law students are encouraged to apply;
  • Background in conservation and general knowledge of the Endangered Species Act, public-land laws, National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act and other environmental laws is preferred.
