The Peoria Police Department Communications Section is the lifeline between our community calling for help and our officers who respond to their calls. We answer 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls and dispatch resources using state-of-the-art technology.

ABOUT THE CAREER
Peoria Police Communication Specialists are cross-trained as call takers and radio dispatchers. They answer emergency and non-emergency calls using a multi-line telephone and 9-1-1 systems. Responsibilities include receiving, processing, and dispatching calls for service and providing information to personnel. This position requires shift work and all employees must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.

Applications will be reviewed, and the most qualified applicants will be invited to this in-person testing process. The CritiCall computerized pre-employment test measures your typing speed and ability along with underlying skills and abilities that a person needs to be successful as a police communications dispatcher. - Open House/Job Orientation
Applicants that pass the CritiCall Skills Test will be invited to a mandatory Open House/Job Orientation. This will provide applicants firsthand information on a 911 Communications Center and the opportunity to meet other Communications Specialists. Applicants are welcome to bring spouses and / or adult family.
- Interviews
Applicants that pass the skills test will be scheduled for an oral board interview. Oral boards may also be conducted via Teams, if applicants are out of state.
- Background Investigation and Polygraph
A thorough background investigation will be conducted on the most qualified applicant(s) for the position.
- Conditional Job Offer (CJO)
A conditional job offer is a preliminary offer of employment that depends on the applicant meeting certain requirements. A conditional job offer is not final until the applicant fulfills all the conditions and receives a final job offer.
- Medical Examination and Drug Screen
Applicants must pass a drug screen and vision and hearing tests. Eyesight corrected to 20/20 and hearing in both ears not less than 40db.
- Psychological Screening
A battery of psychological tests shall be administered, and the tests will be evaluated by a licensed psychologist and used in conjunction with a personal interview to evaluate the applicant and determine their suitability for employment.
- Sit Along in the Dispatch Center
Each applicant will complete a minimum 2-hour sit along between the timeframe of their CJO and FJO. This will give the applicant the opportunity to sit alongside another 9-1-1 Dispatcher to see and hear how calls are received and dispatched.
- Final Job Offer (FJO)
The Chief of Police, based upon the results of the selection process and personal interviews, shall make the final hiring decision.

Other Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: High school graduation or equivalency.
- Experience: 6-9 months experience. Some previous experience required in the same or similar previous positions.
- Physical Demands: Work requires moderate physical exertion. Forces exerted are equivalent to lifting between 10 and 25 pounds.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Ability to type a minimum of 35 words-per-minute.
- Must pass vision and hearing tests. Eyesight corrected to 20/20 and hearing in both ears not less than 40db.
- Possession of or ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire, an Arizona State Criminal Justice Information Systems Terminal Operator Certification.
