Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the District Landscape Architect, the Landscape Associate's prime responsibilities will be planning, organizing, and acting as a lead for the landscape staff engaged in support of the California Department of Transportation's (Caltrans) Mission and Vision. The incumbent is responsible for implementing Department policies and maintaining professional standards as they apply to District 12’s project development and operational activities. In this capacity, the incumbent may work on multi-modal transportation and facility design, planting and irrigation design with the use of computer aided drawings, Visual Impact Assessments (VIA), erosion control design, aesthetics, mitigation, roadside management, resource conservation, regional planning, site planning and development, complete streets, and sustainable design.
Assists Senior Landscape Architect in coordination of project activities with other Caltrans functions, ensures milestones and project delivery commitments are met. Assists in performing Task Management activities relevant to resource expenditures and adherence to the project capital and support budget. Works independently, as a member of Design unit or as Licensed Landscape Architect, guiding the work of landscape personnel, including Landscape Associates and Landscape Technicians.

Working Conditions

Position located in Santa Ana, Orange County
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. Due to periodic problems with heating and air conditioning, the building temperature will fluctuate. Occasional time may be spent in a Warehouse setting that can fluctuate in temperature based upon the time of the year. Office space consists of modular furniture arranged in a functional team-based setting. May be required to travel or participate in training/outreach activities both in the Districts and HQ Program areas. Travel may occasionally be overnight. Overtime may occur and vacation restrictions may apply during peak processing times each year.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

Occasional travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a landscape architect issued by the California Board of Landscape Architects is required for Range D appointment.
