Project Description: At Reed Hilderbrand, storytelling, outreach, and collaboration are integral elements of our design practice. The selected candidate for this internship will gain exposure to the theory and practice of Landscape Architecture by contributing to our ongoing efforts to tell stories about the landscapes we create and the social and ecological relationships they forge. Working closely with our marketing and communications team, the intern will assemble images, texts, and graphics that highlight how we build, what we build, where we build, and for whom we build, and that unearth stories about sites of significance in the neighborhoods where we build.
At the start of their internship the intern will be assigned a mentor, with whom they will meet on a weekly basis. Throughout the internship the intern will also have opportunities to meet with and learn from the studio's Principal, Beka Sturges, ASLA. They will be directly supervised by Designer, Jenna Wu, coordinator of the studio's intern, equity, and research initiatives.
Job Function: Research: (Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Ecology, Sustainability, History); Landscape Design, Graphic Design, Architecture/Urban Planning, Marketing, Advocacy, Arts Administration, Business Development, Support Services & Operations, Outdoor Education, Visual Arts, Writing/Editing
Key Responsibilities: Interns will be expected to:
  • collaborate with our marketing and communications team to assemble images, texts, and graphics that highlight how we build, what we build, where we build, and for whom we build
  • work on projects that unearth stories about local sites of significance, that may contribute to the Landscape Architecture Foundation's What's Out There database of more than 1,900 sites in different United States locales.
  • participate in team meetings.
  • complete weekly research assignments independently, in coordination with their research advisor.
  • Assist with office work in all capacities as needed.

Ideal Skills or Qualifications Needed:
The ideal candidate will have:
  • strong writing and communication skills
  • an interest in how people understand, represent, construct, and interact with designed landscapes
  • an interest in research, marketing, communications, and landscape history
  • familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) software, or interest in learning this software
  • some graphic design ability (preferred but not required)

Expected Intern Experience Outcomes:
  • an enhanced ability to work with graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
  • new research skills, including strategies for researching current and historical literature centered on community engagement, design, planning, etc.
  • a broad-based understanding of contemporary Landscape Architecture theory & practice
  • experience articulating and sharing design research
  • new connections and mentors in the design fields

Anticipated Time Requirements: 4 days per week (30 hours/week for 8 weeks)

Work Model: In-person research and communications internship
Pay Details: Unpaid. Funding for students may be available through the Yale Office of Fellowships and Funding, OCS, or other Yale institutional resources.
