Description
The Dane County Land & Water Resources Department in Madison, WI has a current full time (1.0 FTE) opening for a Land Restoration Specialist - Project position. The Eligibility List created will be used to fill future vacancies over the next six (6) months.

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, the Land Restoration Specialist will support the Botanist/Naturalist and Land & Water Volunteer Coordinator through the implementation of ecological restoration and land management activities and the coordination, training, and supervision of volunteers and partner groups on various projects within the Dane County Parks system.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Work directly with the Dane County Park Botanist/Naturalist and Land & Water Volunteer Coordinator, Friends Groups, partner groups and individual volunteers to support land management projects on Dane County lands. Tasks include coordinating with and assisting project leads, preparing for events, securing tools and supplies, and providing guidance and oversight. Regularly lead volunteer activities and LTE staff on weekdays and weekends related to restoration and land management including tasks such as invasive species removal, seed collection and processing, seeding/planting, erosion control, mulching and other tasks. Operation of equipment including chainsaws, trimmers, power tools, seeders, mowers, tractors, trucks, trailers, skid-steers, chippers, sprayers, utility vehicles, prescribed fire equipment and any other motorized and non-motorized equipment required in restoration and land management projects. Assist with the training of volunteers and LTE staff in the proper use and maintenance of equipment. Monitoring and maintaining restoration sites by leading in the removal and control of invasive species through mechanical and chemical control techniques. Assisting with and/or leading prescribed burns. Preparing sites for restoration by clearing trees and vegetation and working the soil for a proper seed bed. Assist with tree removal, planting pruning and basic tree maintenance. Maintain and repair equipment and conduct daily safety checks including oil and lubrication, tires, brakes, protective shields and any other safety checks required for before use. Document and track a large dataset of invasive species populations using various types of mapping programs. Document fieldwork and develop summaries and reports of accomplishments. Track and refresh inventory of supplies, tools, and personal protective equipment for staff and volunteers. Help maintain inventory and database of native seeds.
Education, Experience & Special Requirements
At least a two-year associates degree in the field of Natural Resource Management or two- years of experience working in the area of restoration and vegetation management. Must have experience in developing and leading volunteer related projects. Must be able to operate large and small power equipment used in the land management industry. Must be able to read and develop project plans and provide both oral and written reports.
Special Requirements:
Must have a valid Certified Pesticide Applicators License in category 3.0 Turf & Landscaping or 6.0 Right of Way & Natural Areas at time of application. Must have the NWCG S-130 and S-190 fire fighter certification at time of application. Must have chainsaw safety and operation training at time of application.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:
This position is frequently active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling). Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and up to 75 pounds with assistance. Work will be outdoors in varying terrains in harsh temperature conditions. This position requires flexible work hours including weekdays, weekends and evenings to assist and lead volunteer projects.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Must be able to identify plants including prairie, woodland and wetland species. Must possess a thorough understanding of Land Restoration and management principles. Knowledge of best management practices for controlling invasive species. Must possess sound judgement with the ability to make decisions and solve problems independently when working in the field. Must be able to interpret and prepare maps. Must have written and oral communication skills to keep the public informed and updated on project work, produce work summaries and make presentations to Friends group board members and other partners. Must be able to listen and follow instructions. Must have interpersonal skills to educate, train, and lead volunteers. This position requires collaboration with staff and volunteers and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment towards a common goal.

Bilingual Pay: Employees who work in bilingual designated positions receive an additional $2.00 per hour.
Undesirable Hours Premium Pay: Employees may receive undesirable hours pay of $2.00 for anytime worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m and for anytime on Saturday and/or Sunday. (not applicable with all employee groups).
Paid Parental Leave: Dane County also provides 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth or adoption of a child.
Caregiver Leave: Dane County offers 80 hours of paid leave to care for an ill family member.
Telecommuting: Telecommuting allows employees to work remotely for all or part of their workweek. Dane County considers telecommuting to be a viable, flexible option when both the employee and the job are suited to such an arrangement. Dane County will permit telecommuting when it benefits the productivity of the employee and their department and if determined by employee's department that telecommuting is not detrimental to either the County or the employee.

WI Retirement System: Employees hired after 7-1-11 must be expected to work a minimum of 1200 hours annually to be enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System when hired.
