Laboratory Technician position
The Simons Electron Microscopy Center (SEMC) is a global leader in cryo electron microscopy (cryoEM) and provides expertise and resources for understanding both molecular and cellular structures. The facilities include 12 transmission electron microscopes and two dual-beam scanning electron microscopes. SEMC serves the nine members institutions of NYSBC, provides access and training to the national research community through the NIH National Center for CryoEM Access and Training (NCCAT), provides sample preparation and access and training for in situ cryoET through the NIH National Center for In-situ Tomographic Ultramicroscopy (NCITU), develops and disseminates new technologies through the Simons Resource for Automated Molecular Microscopy (SRAMM), and includes the Simons Machine Learning Center (SMLC) where a team of machine learning, computer vision, and computational biology experts are pushing the boundaries of machine learning and structural biology.
The New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC) is a global leader in structural biology. The Center’s main facility comprises 50,000 square feet in Upper Manhattan and houses advanced instrumentation in Cryo-Electron Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, and Protein Production. Its X-ray crystallographic facility is located at the National Synchrotron Light Source II at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. NYSBC is led by world leaders in structural biology and an outstanding staff of 50 researchers.
SEMC is seeking a laboratory/research technician to add to its electron microscopy operations team. The main duties of this position involve service and assisting our external users make use of the scientific equipment at the center. Applicants must be able to work in a multi-tasking environment where priorities may change often and be able to work well with others. We currently operate a cryoEM sample preparation laboratory and several EM suites with 7 Titan Krioses, 3 Glacioses, 2 side-entry TEMs, and soon to be 3 cryo-FIB/SEMs.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain the cryoEM sample preparation laboratory and scientific equipment.
- Support researchers using the cryoEM sample preparation laboratory and scientific equipment.
- Assist with training and answering questions on cryoEM SOPs.
- The expectation is this individual will have the capacity to scientifically grow in the position and take on routine staff microscopist duties.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
- a science degree (Associate degree or above),
- awareness of structural biology and related fields,
- familiar working in a laboratory environment,
- comfortable around scientific instrumentation, and
- basic computer skills (comfortable with Linux environment and web interfaces) .
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
- laboratory experience with biological macromolecules (protein, RNA, DNA) at some level,
- organizational and time management skills,
- able to communicate with customers for cross-training and answering questions about SOPs, and
- exposure to high-end instrumentation and electron microscopes.
