Job Description
The Genomics Process Technician is responsible for delivering all whole-genome, skim, and other sequencing technology projects on time and to quality control (QC) standards. Due to the custom nature of these projects, the Genomics Process Technician is skilled in deciding what approach to take to achieve the client’s project goal and interacts with the client effectively to make these choices.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential functions satisfactorily:
- In collaboration with the Lab Services Project Management, interact with clients in a professional manner to create a plan for sample processing that meets the demands of the project goal
- Log in samples to LIMS and other IT infrastructure and updates databases to keep track of sample processing
- Extract DNA from samples when necessary, or ensures Extraction Team Lead delivers extracted material, and performs QC on samples. Notifies client of QC result, where appropriate
- Ensure that DNA is of a size and concentration suitable for library preparation and capture projects, and uses appropriate methods (e.g. shearing, tagmentation) to accomplish this
- Create barcoded libraries for WGS or skim, using a variety of methods including end-repair/A-tailing, tagmentation, or other appropriate methods
- Use customomized probes to perform Capture-seq from libraries
- Use deep understanding of the variables that influence the quality of WGS, skim and Capture-seq library preparation to optimize project approach and outcome
- Effectively coordinate with the Sequencing and Probe coordinator and the Lab Services Project Management to prioritize sample processing and sequencing
- Store client DNA and libraries in an organized and rational manner, such that projects can be easily found and re-processed if necessary
- Use IT infrastructure and collaborates professionally and productively with fellow Genomics Process Technician to create a plan for systematically processing client projects
- Communicate and collaborate with Probe and Sequencing Coordinator and Technical Director to gain insight into best practices
- Perform other duties as assigned by management to meet business and customer needs
Qualiications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant life sciences field
- 1 or more years of experience performing next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques and sample preparation for NGS in a lab environment
- Proven track record working as part of a cross-functional team
- Working knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years in NGS library prep, preferably in high-throughput labs
- Proven experience working with automated equipment
- Evidence of excellent lab technique
