What You Will Do:
We are currently searching for a Laboratory Technical for current and future positions within the NIH. The primary function of this position is to perform a variety of laboratory techniques and procedures to support the research activities associated with a specific laboratory and/or Principal Investigator (PI). This is a full-time, on-site that could be located at one of the NIH campuses, primarily in Bethesda.
Research Tasks
  • Perform experiments and tests on samples according to protocols.
  • Perform routine experiments and tests following established procedures and protocols and utilizing aseptic technique to perform experiments.
  • Perform fundamental procedures required for research projects, that may include:
  • handling infectious agents,
  • performing immune cell isolations,
  • immunohistochemistry,
  • tissue sectioning,
  • fluorescence and brightfield microscopy.
  • cell culture,
  • Western blotting,
  • immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry,
  • digital flow cytometry,
  • ELISAs,
  • DNA/RNA isolations,
  • PCR, RT-PCR, quantitative PCR.
  • Work with a variety of routine and specialized laboratory instruments and equipment in the laboratory.
  • Work with staff on the maintenance and screening of transgenic mouse colony and maintenance of laboratory cell lines (lab dependent).
  • Record details of experimental procedures, results, and protocols.
  • Collect, enter/update, and maintain research data into laboratory notebooks and databases in preparation for analysis and interpretation, work with staff on the maintenance of laboratory logs and databases.
  • Determine when and what modifications and adjustments are necessary for experiments. Utilize trial and error methods customize protocols associated with the biological systems utilized in the laboratory.
  • Evaluate new types of experimental approaches analyses and recommend changes to protocols.
  • Develop and assist in implementing new assays for application based on requests from investigators.
  • Provide experimental progress updates on procedures performed in the laboratory.
  • Engage in problem solving to identify technical difficulties and ensure steady progress.
  • Analyze and interpret collected data to reveal conclusions and shortcomings. Utilize statistical analysis techniques to assist with this analysis.
  • Convey and discuss research results with team lab members.
  • Draw conclusions about the results as related to the ability of the experiments to answer the questions posed.
  • Prepare summaries and reports based on results and findings with a goal of providing high quality experimental data suitable for publication.

Lab Maintenance/ Support
  • Prepare and ensure all specimens, consumables and equipment needed to support the laboratory and related experiments are available, clean and in good working order.
  • Process and organize multiple samples simultaneously; store new samples, update database, retrieve samples with proper authorization.
  • Work with staff to implement storage and distribution of biological samples for future scientific research.
  • Perform quality control procedures necessary to ensure the accuracy of each test system, sample processing, storage, and inventory of samples; ensure that reagents are made correctly.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and calibrating various laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Replace expired reagents, chemical or defective products following established safety standards.
  • Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain sample and database inventory includes stocked supplies and records of working reagents, including fixatives, buffers, solvents, and staining.
  • Monitor the inventory of available laboratory specimens, supplies, equipment, and reagent materials, record usage details.
  • Make purchase recommendations on needed supplies and prepare purchase reports.
  • Provide technical help and expertise to lab members.
  • Work with staff to monitor and ensure that appropriate laboratory safety courses and certifications for staff are up to date.

What You Will Need:
  • At least 1 year of experience

What Would Be Nice To Have:
  • Experience working a BSL 2 or 3 laboratory environment.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks.
  • Maintaining stock solutions.
  • Inventory management / supply ordering.
  • Data analysis.
  • MS Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, & PowerPoint
