The Division of Forensic Sciences is currently recruiting to fill multiple vacancies for Laboratory Technician 1 - Evidence Specialist positions to join their team. These positions will be headquartered at the Madison Crime Laboratory, located at 4626 University Avenue in Madison, WI.
This recruitment may be used to fill any future vacancies for this classification or similar over the next six (6) months.

Position Summary
This is the entry-level work involving the proper receipt, storage, security and disposition of evidence submitted to the laboratory. Strict documentation of the evidence chain of custody is an integral part of this position. In addition, maintain compliance with ANAB and Crime Laboratory Bureau Policies and Procedures for requirements of Accreditation of Forensic Science Testing Laboratories.
This position works closely with law enforcement personnel, District Attorneys and their office personnel, and Crime Laboratory analysts. This position may have the opportunity to assist other units within the Madison Crime Laboratory. All of these duties are accomplished under close, progressing to limited supervision.
Salary Information
The Laboratory Technician I position is in pay schedule 06 and pay range 12 with a starting rate of $21.12/hr . Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. A 12-month probationary period may be required.
Job Details
The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.
A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.
Qualifications
Please clearly address all of the following in your applicant materials:
Minimally qualified candidates must have the following training, education and/or experience:
  • Performing data entry with required high-level of accuracy
  • Applying quality control principles and techniques or following strict adherence to standardized procedures.
  • Using Microsoft Suite products, or similar software, on a daily basis to:
    • Create and/or maintain spreadsheets and databases.
    • Create, edit, and proofread documents
    • Utilizing Outlook e-mail and calendaring functions

In addition to the qualifications listed above, a well-qualified applicant will also have a combination of training, education, and/or experience in:
  • Current methods and procedures used in the handling, inventory, and preservation of evidence
  • Entering large quantities of data with high accuracy
  • Applying quality control and standardized procedures in a laboratory or law enforcement setting.
