Job Title: Lab Tech I - Gross Room Technologist

Job Summary:
Nature of Work:
Gross Room Technologist (GRT) is an allied health professional who provides services in anatomic pathology under the direction of the Gross Room Supervisor and Pathologist. The GRT grosses simple anatomic pathology specimens as well as interacts with other allied health professionals, such as nurses and support staff, to resolve interdisciplinary issues. Additionally, the GRT must have a broad understanding of the day to day operations of the Gross Room and is critical in maintaining organization and efficiency.
Examples of Work Performed:
  • Properly accessions surgical pathology specimens
  • Obtains pertinent clinical information and history
  • Grosses simple, non-complicated surgical pathology specimens, including dermatology specimens
  • Facilitates section/cassette organization and transport to tissue processors
  • Aids Attending Pathologists, Residents, Pathologists' Assistants, Lab Aides and Student Interns
  • Performs frozen sections
  • Documents time records for various tracking mechanisms
  • Stains frozen section slides
  • Performs routine cryostat maintenance
  • Stocks and orders supplies
  • Maintains Gross Room
  • Maintains Gross Room equipment
  • Takes gross photos
  • Organizes completed specimens and transports them to the specimen storage area
  • Performs tissue disposal based on appropriate tissue storage and disposal requirements
  • Assists with tracking, organization and disposition of medical-legal specimens
  • Completes all CU training and compliance courses
  • Coordinates Prostate Lab or Cytogenetics specimen pick up
  • Facilitates organization of POC's and assures appropriate consent forms are obtained
  • Maintains Patient Confidentiality by following Healthcare insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Create electronic spreadsheets as appropriate

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
    • Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Lift, push, and/or pull up to 20 lbs.
  • Work in an environment that may expose you to fumes, chemicals, liquid nitrogen, extreme cold, blood/body fluids, and infectious disease.
  • Frequently wash your hands, as biohazardous materials may be present.
  • Sit and stand for long periods of time, frequently walk, and bend/stoop, as well as execute repetitive motions.
  • Work with complex and sharp laboratory equipment, and various chemical and biological solutions.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment when handling biological samples and hazardous chemicals.
  • Work within a high-level secure facility.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of experience in a clinical lab.
  • Experience using laboratory equipment such as complex machinery and staining systems.
  • Experience calculating lab results and data using math and analytical skills.
  • Experience using MS Word and Excel. Preferred experience will include developing reports, spreadsheets, and databases using the mentioned software programs.
  • Experience entering data into an electronic system.
  • Experience with medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology.
  • Experience purchasing and maintaining lab supplies.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining laboratories and lab equipment.
  • Experience working within an educational medical lab environment in laboratories.
  • Coursework in anatomy, physiology, and histology with experience in anatomic pathology. Ideal candidate has experience grossing simple anatomic pathology specimen and documented proficiency.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Personal judgement in describing surgical pathology specimens and the way they organize daily workflow.
  • Ability to know when to consult a supervisor about various issues.
  • Apply strict attention to detail at all times, and show a willingness to resolve issues or seek a supervisor to do so.
  • Coursework in anatomy, physiology and histology with experience in anatomic pathology. Ideal candidate has experience grossing simple anatomic pathology specimen and documented proficiency.

Results of Actions:
Grossing errors and specimen mix-ups can be devastating to the patient and potentially lead to an inaccurate diagnosis.
Communications:
Internal/external communications are frequent among coworkers, which include pathology staff, trainees, clinicians, nurses, transcriptionists, etc. Internal discussions could involve procedures, problems and upgrades. External communications are interdisciplinary in nature.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at
$45,792-$53,210
The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
