Job Summary
The Carl R. Woese Institute of Genomic Biology (IGB) is a premier interdisciplinary research institute that brings together expertise from various disciplines to solve challenges using genomic technologies. The position of the Laboratory Supervisor will manage research in multiple interdisciplinary lab spaces and will be responsible for educating and implementing research safety policy and practices. The position interacts routinely with faculty, staff, and trainees serving as a conduit for all research activities within the lab space and works directly with facilities and administrative staff to support the research enterprise. IGB provides professional development opportunities and avenues for career growth. Duties & Responsibilities

• Laboratory Maintenance:
  • Managing and maintaining common laboratory space, equipment, and equipment scheduling;
  • Managing and overseeing laboratory maintenance budget with multiple funding sources, and ordering lab supplies;
  • Overseeing microbial strain collections, freezer stocks, and databases.
• Training:
  • Providing technical guidance to laboratory personnel in growth and maintenance of microbial cultures, all aspects of molecular biology, including PCR and DNA and RNA extractions, and optimizing research protocols;
  • Training laboratory personnel in the use of specialized laboratory equipment including centrifuges, HPLC, FPLC, LC-MS, mass spectrometry, anaerobic chambers, microscopes, etc.;
  • Training of new lab members in lab safety requirements and good laboratory practice;
  • Supervising undergraduate students and lab assistants, including task assignment, scheduling, mentoring, and time approvals.
• Equipment Maintenance:
  • Maintaining a preventative maintenance schedule for common equipment as needed and assist lab groups in the maintenance of individual equipment;
  • Maintaining an accurate equipment and chemical inventory for each separate research group within the lab.
• Safety Compliance:
  • Ensuring regulatory safety compliance is met, permits for controlled materials are in place, biohazards and chemical wastes are disposed of properly and records maintained;
  • Participate in the annual biosafety audit by working closely with the IGB Safety Officer.
• Depending upon the nature of the projects and experience of the candidate, the position may occasionally carry out independent research on assigned projects and contribute to writing of peer-reviewed publications and research proposals, or other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the positionANDtwo (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the positionORTotal of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.NOTE: A Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biological/Life Sciences or related field, including but not limited to microbiology, biology, biochemistry or chemistry. Minimum one year of experience in a similar laboratory or research supervisory position.
Master's degree in Biological/Life Sciences or a related field, including but not limited to microbiology, biology, biochemistry or chemistry. Experience in common microbiological and molecular biological techniques; Experience in chemical synthesis and separation methods; Experience in HPLC, FPLC and Mass Spectrometry; Experience in genomic techniques. Supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge or familiarity with microbiological, molecular biological, and genomic techniques.
• Knowledge and/or familiarity with chemical synthesis and separation methods.
• Effective communication, personal relations, organizational, and team leadership skills.
• Attention to detail.
• Computer proficiency with standard software.
• Demonstrated ability to perform with a professional demeanor in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, under minimal supervision.
• Ability to promote and manage scientific collaborations.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2408 - Laboratory Manager position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 2/16/2024. Salary range begins at $50,000/year and is commensurate with experience.
