LABORATORY SCIENTIST I

Position Summary: The Laboratory Scientist I performs a variety of clinical and research testing in CSC’s CLIA-certified biochemical and molecular genetics laboratory. Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: sample intake and documentation, DNA isolation, molecular diagnostic testing, amino acid quantification, assay design and development, and analysis and recording of results. They ensure proper recordkeeping, as well as compliance with policies set by the laboratory and regulatory agencies under the supervision of the Laboratory Director(s). The Laboratory Scientist I may have the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge collaborative research efforts and community outreach efforts.
Minimum Requirements to apply:
- BA or BS in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or relevant field
- Working knowledge of human genetics
- Experience with various laboratory techniques and proficiency following established protocols
- Ability to participate in on-call, off-hours laboratory services 1 week per month
- Proficiency with or ability to learn Microsoft Office Suite, Apple OS, DropBox, FileMaker Pro, Epic EMR, RedCap, and various data analysis programs
Responsibilities include:
- Performing quantitative extraction, purification, isolation, and/or analysis of amino acids and other compounds from human fluids, tissues, or cultured cells according to established laboratory procedures for HPLC or other analytical techniques, as required.
- Performing isolation of DNA and/or RNA from human fluid or tissue.
- Performing routine molecular diagnostic testing (e.g., PCR, Sanger sequencing, chromosomal microarrays, high resolution melt analysis, next-generation sequencing).
- Entering appropriate test results into the laboratory database in a timely manner and providing preliminary interpretations of test results for verification by the Laboratory Director(s).
- Serving as part of the laboratory on-call service, performing diagnostic testing, amino acid quantification, or other analytical techniques outside of normal business hours.
- Tracking inventory of laboratory supplies and place orders, as needed, maintaining accurate records in the purchase order database.
- Assisting with the organization and execution of research collaborations, which may include sample collection, sample preparation, accurate documentation, biochemical or molecular assay design and execution, and/or arranging for sample shipping/receiving.
