Job description

Job Title:Laboratory Assistant II

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Supervisor

Job Summary:

The Laboratory Assistant II performs pre-analytical specimen receipt, processing, identification verification and specimen storage. The Lab Assistant II operates centrifuge and pneumatic tube systems, office equipment, enters information and tests orders in to the laboratory computer system. The Lab Assistant II is responsible for ensuring correct patient identification on specimens and documentation and resolutions of pre-analytical specimen related issues. The Lab Assistant II manages work unit supply ordering and inventory. The Lab Assistant II provides training to others. The Lab Assistant II performs phlebotomy on inpatient floors and supports the ED phlebotomy staff. The Lab Assistant II may be required to draw outpatients on off-hours.

Job Responsibilities include:

  1. Registers, receives, processes and delivers all specimens into appropriate laboratory department for testing or Sendout protocols.*

  2. Perform phlebotomy successfully* using required Personal Protective Equipment and adhering to proper hand hygiene. Phlebotomist will use safety devices and/or engineering controls (butterfly safety devices, needle shields)

  3. Verify patient identification and test requirements*

  4. Operate, maintain and troubleshoot centrifuge equipment*

  5. Utilize multiple computer systems to complete proper patient test orders*

  6. Perform problem specimen documentation and resolution*

  7. Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, HIPPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines*

  8. Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities and maintain inter-and intra-departmental work flow by cooperating with others*

  9. Maintain adequate inventory and conserve resources*

  10. Maintain professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities*

  11. Is flexible in assuming additional responsibilities as assigned*

Physical Demands: May require light lifting (up to10 pounds) and carrying supplies. Must be able to push the phlebotomy cart. Repetitive use of hands (e.g. computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time is often necessary; must be able physically to operate centrifuge and pneumatic tube system used in the job.

Education / Experience:

Required: High school diploma or equivalent

External: Vocational phlebotomy (or related) course/program, or 1 year working phlebotomy experience.

Internal: Completion of phlebotomy career-ladder program

Additional Qualifications: Knowledge of laboratory functions, medical terminology, a background in science and 1-2 years medical experience is preferred but not required. Previous experience and knowledge of computers and keyboarding, telephone operations and other office equipment desired. Must have the ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling. Must be organized, able to prioritize and work in a fast paced environment. Problem solving ability and attention to detail is required. Good written and oral communication skills preferred. Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time and adjust to changes in work volumes.

Schedule:Per Diem - Days Flex (Overnight and early morning draw coverage)
