Position Summary
The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for assuming effective administration and lab management, maintaining operational excellence within the division. The Lab Manager provides administrative support for various needs of the faculty PI and lab members with functions including managing PI's correspondence and letters of recommendation, processing travel and business expenses, visitor and meeting arrangements, website updates, supporting proposal development in collaboration with SPA, monitoring laboratory accounts and overseeing laboratory inventory and purchasing, and other responsibilities and projects as may be needed.
Responsibilities
Assisting principal investigator in the management of:
- Proposal development, submission, and account management
- Coordinates proposal budget development and preparation, reviews proposal against requirements, and submits to sponsoring agencies and partners, often within tight time-frames. Collaborates closely with the Grants and Contracts Managers in the Dean's Office, and with SPA/SPF as required.
- Monitors budgets and project expenses for 5-10 grants, in collaboration with departmental finance office.
- Assists PI in coordination and management of center grants, including the organization of renewal of the center grants - Currently, the PI plays a leadership role in two major research centers at Columbia, the DOE Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) on Programmable Quantum Materials and part of the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) for Precision-Assembled Quantum Materials.
- Acts as a liaison between the PI and the departmental financial and administrative offices, Sponsored Projects Administration, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS), and University Development and Alumni Offices. Provides support for the PI's extensive correspondence, maintains good relationships with lab collaborators, and sends packages and letters of recommendation. Serves as the main point of contact with students, staff, and prospective students.
- Supports arrangements for lab visitors, including appointment approval, composing letters of invitation, arranging safety training with EH&S, and building access with departmental office.
- Reviews and processes travel and business reimbursements for PI in Concur, and tracks timely processing.
- Manage laboratory inventory, and assist lab members to submit and track purchase orders with department finance office.
- Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required in a scientific discipline
- Two Years of Experience in a research environment
Preferred Qualifications
Three years of relevant experience
Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
Basic word processing, spreadsheet, and accounting skills.
