Job Summary:
The Lab Assistant - Lead must possess and apply knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of a Lead in a dignified and compassionate manner, including but not limited to:

• Greets patients; handles telephone calls; enters/updates orders into the computer system.
• Performs phlebotomy duties; maintains positive identification of specimen throughout processing.
• Prioritizes tasks, giving STAT requests highest priority.
• Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to provide age specific treatment and care.
• Maintains supplies; performs inventory management; dates reagents/other supplies; removes out dated items. Performs equipment cleaning and maintenance in assigned area.
• Recognizes situations/results that need to be discussed with Lab Technologist.
• Distributes computer generated reports.
• Maintain a thorough working knowledge of applicable current standards of care, including equipment functions and uses.
• Assists Lab Leadership with the following operations of the assigned group:
• Coordinating orientation of new Lab Assistants into the Laboratory department.
• Ensures compliance with established policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes and improvements.
• Identifies resource needs; review needs with appropriate leadership staff.
• Promotes teamwork with all member of the Laboratory Department.
• Assumes the supervisor role of assigned group in the absence of the Lab Leadership.
• Planning, prioritizing, assigning, and reviewing work of assigned groups.
• Staff schedules.
• Facilitates communication and collaboration among Lab Assistants and other hospital personal.
• Other roles and responsibilities as assigned

Supervised by: Laboratory Leadership
Requirements
Educational Requirements:

• High school graduate or equivalency;
• Formal phlebotomy training &/or demonstrated skills preferred.

Other Requirements:

• Verbal ability required understanding written and verbal instructions.
• Conduct themselves in a courteous, helpful, dignified and professional manner at all times when dealing with patients, co-workers, supervisors and or the public.
• Excellent communication skills necessary to deal with people from varying backgrounds.
• Demonstrated computer skills.
• Time management skills.
• Motor coordination and finger dexterity are necessary to operate equipment.

Preferred Requirements:

• Demonstrated clinical expertise in phlebotomy with 5+ years' experience.

Additional Information:
Work is of light demand. Routine lifting requirements of less than 50 pounds. Standing, sitting, walking, bending, and reaching required. Exposure to hazardous infectious biological specimens and caustic reagents. Works inside.
