Description of Job Duties
Position Summary:
The Coffee Lab Graduate Assistant helps manage the state-of-the-art Coffee Lab at North Central College. It is a faculty-student-partner collaboration that focuses on direct trade, relationship-based social enterprises and provides a distinct educational model and business opportunity that serves the campus and community. Building on the work of Enactus and their coffee business, the Coffee Lab provides roasting services, private and public coffee classes, coffee tastings, coffee brewing, and other events and trainings. Through these offerings, students, faculty, alumni, and community members collaborate to provide rich experiential learning opportunities.
Essential Functions:
  1. Support the vision for the North Central College Coffee Lab, as set by the Coffee Lab Advisory Board, to operate this signature, high-impact, experiential learning opportunity through a student-run business that supports the College's strategic plan.
  2. Provide operational management and programmatic execution for all aspects of the Coffee Lab, including roasting, brewing, classes, tours, and student staffing. Be available to respond to immediate needs or equipment issues that arise.
  3. Contribute to the financial sustainability and profitability of the Lab by discovering new sales channels that will generate revenue. Investigate other internal and external funding sources.
  4. Engage the Enactus student organization in the implementation of the Coffee Lab, utilizing student leadership and involvement to drive campus-wide student participation and awareness.
  5. Collaborate and find synergy with the other occupants of Larrance Academic Center: partner with The Union to complement live music and other events that drive business to the Coffee Lab, and with the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to connect co-working members and local entrepreneurs to the functions of the Coffee Lab.
  6. Work with faculty across disciplines to engage students in internships and class projects that complement academic coursework, and research opportunities that complement scholarly endeavors (in areas such as accounting, anthropology, chemistry, entrepreneurship, environmental studies, management, marketing, and religious studies).
  7. Advance the principles of social entrepreneurship and social justice through the Coffee Lab, both through operations and communications. Widely share the story of the Coffee Lab through relevant networks to raise the College's profile.
  8. Partner with the Office of Marketing and Communication to ensure a compelling web presence, creative marketing collateral, and tell the stories of student and community entrepreneurs in a way that showcases the value of the Coffee Lab in the context of a comprehensive liberal arts education.
