Under the direction of the Veterinarian Public Health Associate Director, the Kennel Manager is involved in planning, organizing and evaluating activities to meet the objectives of HCPH Veterinary Public Health. The Kennel Manager provides leadership, organizes and directs kennel operations.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates with the Associate Director to plan for the long and short term needs of the shelter. Submits budget proposals and purchase requests as necessary. Responsible for developing plans to achieve annual goals determined by the administrative staff team.
  • Responsible for maintaining kennel sanitation and cleanliness standards in accordance with recommendations from Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Ensures that euthanasia is performed in a humane and safe manner. Ensures that all staff are trained, and certified if necessary, according to state laws. Will be required to perform humane euthanasia of animals at times.
  • Responsible for kennel equipment maintenance, supply inventory and coordinates with Harris County FPM for building repairs and maintenance. Advises supervisor when contract janitorial and lawn care services are not meeting standards
  • Interviews and is responsible for training new employees. Oversees scheduling, provides scheduled performance appraisals and provides counseling as needed to kennel staff.
  • Coordinates with veterinary staff to ensure the health of all animals and when any shows symptoms of disease.
  • Responsible for compiling daily and weekly kennel reports including kennel count, kennel inventory and euthanasia reports.
  • Responsible for daily observation of animals in quarantine, maintenance of Rabies Logbook and Head to Lab Reports.
  • Responsible for the daily cleaning procedures, as well as the feeding, watering and care of all animals in the shelter. Ensures that sick and/or injured animals are separated from healthy ones. Will be required to assist in the daily cleaning procedures, as well as the feeding, watering and care of the animals when necessary. Assist with picking up supplies as needed using a County Vehicle.

Requirements
Education:
  • High School or equivalent

Experience:
  • At least two (2) years of supervisory experience in an animal shelter/animal care setting
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with aggressive and/or frightened animals
Licensure:
  • Successful completion of the Department of State Health Services' euthanasia certification course by the 120th day of initial employment; certification must be maintained as required by Texas law.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License (must be obtained before the start date)

Work Environment:
  • This job operates in both kennel and professional office environment.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Required field work and travel relative to field supervision and special projects.
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Will require long periods of time standing and able to bend for cleaning cages.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • This is a full time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Hours may vary based on the business needs of the department.
