Summary
K9 connection, a 501(c)(3) program of The People Concern, works to optimize and support healthy human-animal bonds, by providing services and supplies through a variety of activities.
The k9 connection program helps pets of people experiencing homelessness to be healthy, happy and safe through the Pets’ Landing project; and empowers vulnerable youth by engaging them in animal-assisted interventions through k9 connection’s on-site school programs, k9 Academy; an experience-based program that educates and inspires teens who are meeting life’s challenges through bonding with and training homeless shelter dogs.
Qualifications
1. Some familiarity working with high school students and people experiencing homelessness
2. Knowledgeable about dog training and handling
3. Work and/or service volunteer hours spent at a pet clinic/hospital, dog training and care facility, rescue or city/county pet shelter
4. High School Diploma, GED, California High School Proficiency Exam
5. 18 years of age

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Program Director, the k9 part-time staff member will participate in preparation, production and wrap–up of k9 connection’s programs.
Job tasks may include:
1. K9 Academy
2. Join interview team to select new students
3. Program preparation including: selecting student t-shirts by size; preparing name tags; treat pouches; appropriate dog gear and supplies; cut up treats
4. If selecting dogs from one of the six city shelters: complete shelter orientation as a dog handler; attend and assist with temperament testing; participate in dog selection process if appropriate.
5. Daily tasks in coordination with volunteers under the direction of the PD
6. IF QUALIFIED. Pick up and drop off of dogs.
7. Set up/break down course as instructed by trainer
8. Set up/break down classroom
9. Hand out snacks; fill water bowls; maintain crates and van; help maintain classroom supplies; Pick-up dog elimination
10. Interact with students, volunteers, staff and community/school personnel.
11. Be knowledgeable about school internship responsibilities and help guide them
12. Know all students, staff volunteers and community/school personnel by name
12. Serve as a positive role model in behavior and attitude
13. Help Peer Leaders (k9 grads) and new students maintain focus during training and in the classroom.
14. Interact with all dogs in program; know each by name
15. Understand and demonstrate all rules related to dog safety and remind students to comply k9 office and storage: re-organizing, re-stocking and labeling supply boxes and shelves.
16. Make note of any supplies that need to be ordered for the next Program.
Pets’ Landing
1. Help prepare all supplies and orders for distribution at the Pet Clinic
2. Load and unload the van, before/after each clinic
3. Work in assigned areas as needed
4. Know inventory of all supplies and when to order additional
5. Pick up supplies at donor locations like San Diego Humane Society
6. Fulfill supply and food orders that come through the Google forms; advise staff as to when they are ready; if necessary drop off supplies to participants.
7. Accompany mobile DVM as needed and bring all supplies to the on-site visit.
Work Environment
1. Combination of field and office environment
2. Regularly required to sit, stand, bend; occasionally lift or carry up to 35 lbs.
3. On occasion walk or drive to different local sites
4. Will necessitate working in busy and loud environments
5. Will be exposed to elements like cold, heat, dust, noise and odor
6. May need to bend, stoop, twist and sit throughout the day
