DESCRIPTION
About the Position
This Juvenile Justice Specialist (JJS) is primarily assigned to the MLK Jr. Education Center of Youth Services, which is an alternative education program that serves Juvenile Justice impacted youth. This position focuses primarily on working with MLK students in Horticulture Crew and classes. The MLK JJS will train, teach and work alongside students on a farm to school project, building trails on national forests and engage youth w opportunities to build sustainable practices within our community. Students earn high school credit, community service hours and a vocational stipend while learning alongside this position.
This position focuses primarily on working with MLK students in Horticulture Crew and classes. A secondary responsibility will be working on vocational classes and food preparation in the Youth Services industrial kitchen.
  • Horticulture and Forestry: Perform a variety of duties related to horticulture and forestry in juvenile work crews.
  • Culinary Arts: Perform a variety of duties related to culinary arts. Assist youth enrolled in the Culinary Arts program. Employees in this track assist youth with hands-on experience in all aspects of food service and catering.

About the Division
The Youth Services Division operates 24/7, has approximately 80 full-time staff, six program units, and is located in three different buildings on the John Serbu Youth Campus in Eugene, Oregon. The division is comprised of the following units:
  • Education & Vocation Services (MLK Education Center): A collaboration between the division and Lane Education Service District (Lane ESD). Services provided include alternative school for high-risk, adjudicated, community youth; education for youth in Detention and Phoenix Treatment; horticulture and culinary arts vocational programs; and community service and restitution crews for youth.
The work of the division is complex and covers multiple, diverse subject matter areas, governed by multiple regulatory bodies and requiring specialized knowledge. The division is deeply focused on cultivating a positive workplace culture and addressing long standing structural and cultural deficits.
Schedule: Wednesday - Saturday; 7:00am - 5:30pm; Summer Hours are Tues-Fri, 7am-5:30pm

QUALIFICATIONS
Training:
  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
  • One year of experience working with juveniles in community or social services programs, an educational or vocational setting, or in a criminal justice setting, performing work in the area of assignment.
An equivalent combination of experience and training that will demonstrate the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Special Requirements:
  • If required to drive, must be in possession of a valid driver's license at time of application, and a valid Oregon Driver's license by the time of appointment.
  • If hired in the Culinary Arts Track must obtain and maintain a Food Handler's Card within 30 days from the date of hire. Must be ServSafe Food Safety certified within 6 months of employment.
  • This position requires an extensive background check. Those who have been convicted of felony or serious misdemeanor crimes may not qualify for employment.

Testing Requirements: Successful hire will be contingent upon taking a bilingual test to demonstrate proficiency in both English & Spanish.
