About the Role 
The Journeyman Gas Fitter reports to the Smart Meter Deployment Manager at Bermex. This position plays a key role in gas meter maintenance, exchange, and measurement. This position also requires a high degree of walking in outdoor environmental conditions, excellent time management, and exceptional flexibility day to day. 

What You’ll Do:
Gas Meter Exchanges: 
  • Perform visual inspections of gas service for leaks 
  • Identify hazards at meter sites and report accordingly 
  • Properly change out gas meters of varying sizes and brands 
  • Properly change out gas meter registers for AMI/AMR upgrade 
  • Perform safety checks to ensure proper installation 

Customer Communication: 
  • Refer all consumer complaints to the appropriate authorities 
  • Provide general information about the meter services to customers, when applicable 
  • Use telephones, tablets, and/or computers to communicate 
Other duties as assigned. 

About You 
Must haves: 
  • Education: Some High School education must be 18 years of age or older. Must possess a Journeyman Gas Fitter license, active in the state of Alabama or in other states with a reciprocity agreement. Upon hire, the candidate will need to complete and pass all Pipeline Operator Qualification (OQ) trainings. Must possess a valid driver’s license 
  • Experience: 1 year experience in exchanging gas meters of varying sizes with ability to properly safety test, troubleshoot and relight pilot lights on a variety of existing appliances 

Nice to haves: 
  • Education: High School Degree  
  • Experience: 3 years of experience in exchanging gas meters of varying sizes with ability to properly safety test, troubleshoot and relight pilot lights on a variety of existing appliances 

Your Skills: 
  • Ability to multi-task, and work independently and as a team 
  • Exceptional flexibility in daily routines and route scheduling. Must be flexible in times of need, including extended nights and weekends 
  • Adequate time management skills to finish daily work in a timely manner 
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable interacting with management and customers 
  • Ability to interact with unhappy or negative customers in a professional manner 
  • Excellent attention to detail for problem solving and finding 
  • Ability to walk long distances and prepare for weather conditions, accordingly  
  • Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office programs 
  • Place a high value on safety, quality of work, and operational procedures 

This role would not be a good fit if you: 
  • Do not enjoy working independently 
  • Do not enjoy working in outdoor conditions 
  • Do not enjoy walking long distances 
  • Are not flexible and do not enjoy adapting to your current work schedule or routine 
  • Do not have adequate planning and time management skills to finish a days work in a timely manner 

Drug/Alcohol Testing:  
  • Drug/alcohol testing is required  
  • Drug/alcohol testing required per Non-Regulatory requirements for employees working with water, electric, and meters  
  • Drug/alcohol testing required per Federal DOT regulations for employees working with gas meters

Where We Work  
Employees will begin their day at the local office where they will pick up their company vehicle, equipment, and assignments for the day.
