Job Introduction
It's an exciting time to be part of BBC News. We are expanding in North America, our biggest market outside the UK, and we are recruiting a journalist to play a critical role in bringing North American and global audiences to our website (BBC.com/news) and app.
The BBC is the most trusted news brand in the US. The right person for this role has experience as a reporter in daily news, and is able to write sharp news stories with rigour, context and flair. They should have impeccable news judgment, informed by data.
The BBC's North American digital operation covers US and Canadian news for domestic and global audiences. It is staffed 7 days a week, from 6am to 11pm ET. In this role, you will be expected to work shifts including some weekends, and will be based in our Washington DC office.

This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).
Main Responsibilities
As a journalist, you will:
- Write daily news stories, including breaking news
- Contribute to live blogs
- Chase leads and interviews to move a story on
- Identify, research and write sidebar stories that bounce off the news
- Pitch news features with narratives built around original reporting and compelling characters
- Monitor social media, search trends and audience data and use that to improve our storytelling and help us reach new audiences.
- Contribute ideas in editorial meetings around the most useful and creative approaches to our big stories, including the best formats and visual treatments.

What we are looking for:
- Recent experience of writing accurate, engaging and fast-paced news for digital audiences
- A track record of generating original ideas and chasing leads to make sure we get ahead of stories
- Experience of covering the US and/or international news agenda, and an interest in connecting the dots between events and trends in North America and what's happening in the rest of the world
- Familiarity with using social media, search and audience data to improve story telling and broaden coverage
- The ability to come up with angles and approaches to the big stories of the day that will help us reach new and diverse audiences
