ABOUT THE COLLEGE:
The student body at Green River College is made up of approximately 34% Academic Transfer students, 30% seeking Career-Technical Education (which include the Bachelor in Applied Sciences degree), 11% enrolled in College Readiness courses, and 24% in Continuing and Community Education classes. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English as a second language, and Continuing Education students. Position Responsibilities

The Journalism and Broadcasting department is seeking an innovative and creative candidate who is committed to improving our multifaceted Journalism program at Green River College. The successful candidate will be committed to offering high-quality student learning experiences both in and outside the classroom, as well as assisting in the development of Journalism offerings through curriculum review and revision, assessment of student learning, outreach to local high schools and other community partners, and program review. This position includes some release time during the first year of the tenure process to coordinate Green River College’s Journalism program and includes both in-person work on the GRC main campus in Auburn, WA as well as online teaching.

Essential responsibilities include:

  • Teach college level Journalism courses and other related topics.
  • Serve as lead faculty coordinator for journalism & broadcast department, including reviewing and revising curriculum; assessing student learning; and other departmental activities as needed.
  • Manage the student e-newspaper, The Current, and coordinate with student journalists and student affairs, as well as outreach to local high school journalism programs.
  • Journalism faculty also advise students, develop and revise curricula, collaborate with the Humanities division to evaluate and hire adjunct faculty as needed, and develop activities to enhance the department's presence on campus and the recruitment of students. Green River faculty members are expected to be involved in division and campus meetings, committees, and other community activities.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master's Degree in Journalism, Communication Studies/Communication with a Journalism focus, Public Relations, Digital Media, or related fields.
  • Teaching and/or training experience with college students, adult learners, and/or high school populations.
  • Demonstrated experience in journalistic storytelling, newswriting/reporting, and AP style, through a variety of media (e.g. text, images, sound, video/audio, etc.) for various platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills with inter-cultural competency and humility, and commitment to equity in working with students, communities, and/or colleagues from diverse backgrounds including under-represented, marginalized, and under-served communities and identities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Community college teaching and/or program coordination experience, specifically related to journalism or broadcasting, including experience with transfer/degree articulation.
  • Understanding and implementation of learning outcomes assessment.
  • Demonstrated involvement in professional activities in promoting journalism programs on campus and in the community.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Current knowledge, skills and abilities with the evolving uses and types of social media with regards to journalistic storytelling, information dissemination, data visualization, and other topics connected to journalism and digital communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and communicate effectively with colleagues, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Understanding of and demonstrated proficiency with related classroom and program technologies, including MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, FinalCut, Word Press, course management systems, broadcast technology, and similar tools.
