ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $75,000 - $85,000 annually

  • However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate's experience, education, skills, and training.

PAY BASIS:  Monthly

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT:

POSITION PURPOSE:

Under administrative direction of the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Academic Programs, the Interim Director of Undergraduate Advising provides leadership and coordination of academic advising across the university to promote enrollment, retention, and timely graduation of Undergraduate students. Working with School Associate Deans, Academic Department Chairs, and Advising Center Coordinators/Leads, the Interim Director of Undergraduate Advising ensures the consistency, effectiveness, and quality of Undergraduate academic advising services. In addition, the Interim Director will provide a dotted line of supervision and leadership to academic advisors within the campus advising centers.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Undergraduate Advising Oversight & Coordination
    1. Develop and implement a comprehensive academic advising system to meet the needs of all undergraduate students.
    2. Clarify and communicate the role and responsibilities of academic advisors, faculty advisors, and special populations advisors.
    3. Provide ongoing training and regular professional development opportunities for all academic advisors.
    4. Ensure students are provided accurate and prompt advising services in all advising centers.
    5. Consistently implement and effectively utilize advising tools and operational procedures in all advising centers.
    6. Develop and implement regular and comprehensive assessment and review of the quality and effectiveness of advising programs and services to promote a culture of continuous improvement.
    7. Create, maintain, assess, and modify proactive intervention strategies to promote student success, retention, and degree completion.
  2. Strategic Leadership & Committee/Meeting Participation
    1. Provide leadership in campus-wide initiatives and committees to focus on improving undergraduate student retention, graduation rates, and to reduce equity gaps.
    2. Participate and provide leadership in committees such as Advising Leadership Team, Graduation Action Team, Graduation Initiative Task Force, WSCUC Steering Committee, etc.
    3. Represent CSUB at the state-wide CSU Advising Directors meetings.
    4. Provide daily leadership and guidance to current academic advisors in coordination with the Associate Deans or Deans of each advising center. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE -Master's degree from an accredited institution and five (5) or more years of experience as a staff or faculty advisor at CSUB. Experience should include demonstration of advancing retention, graduation, and student success as well as at least two (2) years of providing lead direction in a department, program, or academic support services office.

LICENSES - Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) -

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Strong technical facility with PeopleSoft, OnBase, Runner Connect, and Canvas. 
  • Sound knowledge of student development theory.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity to issues and needs of students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including first-generation college students from low-income families and/or from marginalized or underserved communities.
  • Knowledge of national trends and research-based best practices for student success.
  • Ability to collect, monitor, and analyze student information systems data to make recommendations for action.
  • Ability to research, analyze, interpret, apply, and communicate campus and system wide rules, regulations, and polices.
  • Ability to learn and apply quality management techniques of continuous improvement and employee involvement to assess and improve services, promote campus culture and build teams.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work occasional holidays and adjust working hours to meet special jobs.  May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Seven (7) years of experience as a staff or faculty advisor, which includes providing lead direction in a department, program, or academic support services office.
  • Academic advising experience in the one of six advising centers at CSUB (AH Advising Center, BPA Advising Center, NSME Advising Center, SSE Advising Center, AV Advising Center, or AARC).
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: LIGHT WORK - involves mainly sitting, up to 25% standing or walking; lifting medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: 

  • This position is an interim 12-month term position. At the end of the 12-month term, this position will be evaluated for possible continuation through an organized recruitment.  Additionally, the successful candidate will also have the ability to return to their previously held position at the conclusion of this temporary assignment.
