The Interventional Radiologic Tech performs radiographic procedures employing the use of X-rays to produce images of various parts of the body for the diagnosis in all interventional modalities. Cleans equipment, transports patients and performs clerical duties as required.
A day in the life of an Interventional Radiologic Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
1. Technical procedures are performed competently, meeting the Radiologist's, Cardiologists and Surgeons expectations. Appropriately uses equipment in various areas outside of the department: VIR, OR, Endo Vascular and Cardiac Cath Lab. Ensures that patient images and paperwork are properly recorded into PAC's. Reads, understands and accurately implements physicians' prescriptions/orders. Studies are performed to approved sets of Exam protocols by Radiologists, Cardiologists and Surgeons. Notification of relevant priors to radiologists as needed. Assists Radiologist, Cardiologist and Surgeons with all products pertaining interventional procedures. Ensures accurate and safe operation of contrast injector. Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination in both scrub and technical roles. Assists Radiologist, Cardiologist and Surgeons competently with all products pertaining to interventional procedures.
2. Safely and efficiently utilizes equipment consistent with patient needs and departmental routine. Uses proper exposure values to obtain quality images. Uses proper ID to include patient demographics. Technologist initials on all images. Collimates, uses lead shields and wears film badges.
3. Computer system knowledge: Ensures that patient charges are properly recorded into RIS and procedures are tracked accurately. Utilization of SMS, PACS, RMS, CR and CCL downtime procedures. Thoroughly familiar with technical procedures and QA/QC protocols.
4. Patient Safety: Verifies name and properly identifies patient prior to procedure being performed. Uses two ID's to ensure compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. Follows established protocol for administration of contrast. Interviews patients and reviews charts to ensure safe administration of contrast to patients. Properly completes contrast and patient history questionnaires. Reports med variable issues as needed.
5. Patient Care and Satisfaction: Thoroughly explains all procedures to patients, thus alleviating fears and/or anxiety, and to provide the 'Best Healthcare Experience'.
6. Work Environment: Maintains proper work environment. Prepares room, equipment and materials needed for examinations, positioning aids for patient comfort and security and protective shields and apparel. Rooms are clean and well stocked after each procedure before new patients arrive. Practices appropriate care and utilization of equipment. Contact service vendors as needed and report all repairs to leadership.
7. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
8. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. Graduate of an approved Radiology Tech Program.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
3. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
1. Experience as an OR Tech, Interventional Radiology Technologist or Cardiac Cath Technologist.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. Diagnostic Radiography License or NJ Registered Radiological Technologist License or NJ State Radiography License.
2. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
