Job description

The City of Virginia Beach's Internship Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply and utilize acquired knowledge in field of study.
Eligibility: Must be a currently enrolled student (in an associate's, bachelor's, master's degree or PhD program) and be in good academic standing as determined by the school, college, or university.
Applications received will be considered for fall and winter internship opportunities that become available. We have a variety of departments that may offer internship opportunities in engineering, information technology, library, human resources, business, communications & media relations, as well as finance. Tasks may include working on projects, assisting with day-to-day operations, as well as attending meetings. Our interns often have the opportunity to go on site visits and meet with various stakeholders to learn how the City serves our citizens and tourists.

Budget & Policy Analyst Internship Opportunity:
Our Budget and Management Services department is in search of a detail-oriented
student with exceptional analytical skills for their Budget & Policy Analyst Internship.
Required Education: Masters in Public Administration (Anticipated graduation date May 2024)

Duties:
  • Assisting in departmental budgets.
  • Reviewing and analyzing the fiscal impact of new and redevelopment
    projects.
  • Research and evaluation of policies and alternatives.
  • Development and summarization of financial information for communication with leadership and citizens.
  • Assisting in providing recommendations on revenue.

Biology Laboratory Internship Opportunity:
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works department is looking for Biology Laboratory Interns for the summer of 2024. Summer Workers will work directly with the mosquito control biologist and her assistant to survey adult mosquito populations and perform mosquito-borne disease surveillance. Approximately May 2, 2024 - Oct. 10, 2024.
Required Education: Active student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Entomology, Biology, Animal Science, Environmental Health, or similar discipline.

Duties:
  • Set-up, collections, and maintenance of various types of mosquito traps.
  • Mosquito speciation and preparation of specimens for arboviral isolation.
  • Collection and identification of mosquito eggs & larvae.
  • Collection of blood samples from sentinel chicken flocks.
  • Care and maintenance of the sentinel flocks.
  • Other related tasks

Emergency Management Opportunities
Emergency Management Internship
Required Education: Working towards a degree in Political Science, Business Admin, Social Sciences, History, Psychology, Communication/Journalism, Education, Homeland Security, and other similar disciplines.

Duties:
  • Work alongside EM-SEC personnel to conduct focused and in-depth risk/threat
    assessments at city properties. The efforts would include site visits to survey physical
    properties, conduct staff interviews, liaise with other sources of needed info like PD
    and 911, and broker needed interventions like access, cameras, and architectural
    improvements. Complete reports, summarize findings, and deliver briefs to peers
    and leadership.
  • Assist with training and exercises (Active Threat, De-escalation, Situational
    Awareness, Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package, Threat Management).
  • Other activities in support of the EM-SEC and EM Divisions
  • Contribute to grant management, research, and statistical evaluation.
  • Contribute to special event management, Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
    activations, and weather emergencies when appropriate.
  • Attend City Council and other committee meetings.

Communications Opportunities:
Multimedia Internship:
Required Education: Working towards an associates or bachelors degree in Broadcast Communications, Film Production, or similar.
Required Attachments: Cover Letter and Resume
Duties:
  • Attend video shoots and provide support during production
  • Assist with video editing and post-production editing work
  • General office duties as assigned
  • Develop animation for use in video products and/or social media
  • Participate in creating vertical video for social media

  • Attend video shoots and provide support during production

  • Draft press releases
  • Participate in research and information gathering for special projects
  • Support the City's social media presence by crafting creative content
  • Create presentation decks for internal and external meetings
  • Other projects as assigned
