Job description

The Residential Treatment Centers (RTC) at Sheppard Pratt, located in Towson and Frederick, serve adults with serious mental illness (SMI), ranging in ages from 18 to 30 years of age. The residents reside at the program and the average length of stay is from 12-18 months. The purpose of the RTC is to allow clients to transition from a more intensive treatment setting, such as an inpatient hospital, to a more independent living environment after they are discharged. At the RTC, OT, which collaborates with a multidisciplinary team, provides services along the continuum of care. The OT services are provided by a small group (2-3) of Level II OT Interns, supervised by a licensed OT, who is on-site 2-3 days a week and available 5 days a week by phone/zoom. Both group and individual OT services are offered to all clients. Interns who have performed well at the RTC have exhibited the following qualities: leadership skills, ability to structure their free time, an ability to collaborate well with other interns and staff, comfortable operating independently at times, ability to assert themselves, flexible, creative, and think well on their feet.

Opportunity Time Frame:

This is a 12-week internship consisting of 40 hours per week beginning in May and running for 12 consecutive weeks. The start date is flexible. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a current student at an institution accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association
  • Attend an academic Institution with an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt

Learning Model:

At Sheppard Pratt, we use a collaborative learning model, wherein we have multiple students at one time, which offers the benefits of a supportive learning environment and the opportunity to tap into the additional human resources of the student colleague. Additionally, the senior OT staff all have at least 30 years of clinical experience in varied backgrounds, to further add to the richness of learning. We aim to make learning fun and exciting and we welcome students from all backgrounds who are eager and excited to learn!
