TITLE: Internship Coordinator for Financial Services

DEPARTMENT: Maine Business School

DATE: October 2023

REPORTS TO: Executive Dean of the Maine Business School

 

PURPOSE: This position cultivates relations with employers in Maine and beyond, with the goal of increasing the number and quality of internship opportunities for UMS students. According to the Maine Center for Workforce Research & Information, the Finance & Insurance Industry in the state accounts for 23,257 employees and $2.1 Billion annually. The coordinator will foster tangible, substantial, and achievable learning outcomes as well as networking opportunities for students. These goals will be achieved through strategic employer relations, alumni relations, programming and events, and faculty support.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Represents the University of Maine to prospective partners and developing long-term relationships with businesses or other external constituencies.

· Communicates proactively to all undergraduate or graduate business students to assist them with finding and successfully applying for an internship.

· Conducts outreach to both employers and students before, during, and after the internship, compiles data and results for upper administration.

· Works with the University leadership to promote the internship program internally within the University and the College.

· Plans and coordinates events or related functions for both students and external partners around internships, career planning, or other related matters.

· Develops and maintains professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect.

· Builds productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.

· Utilize coaching and mentoring methods, which provide an environment that is anticipatory,

· Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Must be able to plan and oversee multiple projects or priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to challenging or stressful situations.

· Strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies, both internal and external.

· Utilize technology, including experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, and related platforms.

· Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

· High level of focus and attention to detail.

· The ability to travel normally requiring a valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

· Demonstrated experience working with external constituencies, such as businesses or other organizations.

· Demonstrated experience with academic advising, internships, or related work.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises student employees.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a typical office setting. Employee may experience interruptions and be expected to change the focus of the workday, as there are frequent interruptions and deadlines that must be managed. A high degree of professionalism must be portrayed. Work is often deadline driven and as such maybe stressful at times. Travel will be required to visit employers or external events related to the position.

WORK YEAR: Full-time, fiscal year.

WORK SCHEDULE: Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Work beyond regular hours will be necessary (to include nights and weekends) in order to meet the requirements of the position.

POSITION TYPE: Fixed-length.

SCHEDULE FOR EVALUATION: In accordance with the UMPSA Agreement.

JOB FAMILY/SALARY GRADE: 18/02.

Appropriate background checks required.

All UMS employees are required to comply with applicable policies and procedures, as well as to complete applicable workplace related screenings, and required employee trainings, such as Information Security, Safety Training, Workplace Violence and Sexual Harassment.
