Job description

At Baker McKenzie, we are different in the way we think, work and behave - like no other firm and few other businesses. As a team of 13,000 people, including over 6,500 lawyers, in more than 70 offices worldwide, we have a passionately collaborative community and are committed to world-class career development to everyone in every job at every level in our firm. Baker McKenzie can offer you both the uncompromising commitment to excellence expected of a top firm and a distinctive way of thinking, working and behaving - as a passionately global and genuinely collaborative firm.

For over 40 years, our Chambers-ranked North America International Trade Compliance Practice has provided pragmatic and tailored solutions to help clients respond to changing conditions. Our dedicated global team of more than 450 trade and commerce attorneys act as trusted counsel to more than 500 of the world's largest public companies and specialize in trade compliance, including export controls, sanctions, customs, free trade agreements, antiboycott laws and foreign direct investment.

Baker McKenzie's Chicago office seeks a junior Staff Attorney with an interest in focusing on an International Trade practice for both inbound and outbound trade compliance matters. The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of relevant experience, but we will also consider current law students graduating no later than June 2024 from an accredited JD or LLM program.

Ideal candidates will have experience with or exposure to compliance with US customs/import laws, export controls (the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)), trade and economic sanctions, and anti-boycott controls. Specific experience with any of the following is strongly preferred: advising US and non-US companies on licensing, enforcement actions and governmental audits, internal investigations and compliance audits, disclosures, classification, encryption controls, compliance due diligence in mergers and acquisitions and other cross-border transactions, and on the design, implementation, and administration of trade compliance programs.

Candidates must possess top academic credentials, strong analytical ability, and excellent communication and writing skills. We seek applicants that have the ability to function and collaborate smoothly in a global team environment with culturally diverse team members. Candidates must be admitted and a member in good standing of the Illinois Bar, or eligible to become admitted in Illinois.

Please include a resume, cover letter, unofficial transcripts, and writing sample with your application.
