Job Description
Summary
The scope of the intern’s project will be established in the first weeks with specific goals and deliverables to be completed this summer. The intern project will involve modeling and analyzing the power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The tools used for this project can involve one of several tools used at Chugach Electric including programs such as PSS/E, PowerWord, SynerGEE, or GenTrader. Often data used for the project will come from our OSI SCADA system or our Synchrophasor
network. Through this project the intern will learn about the Chugach Electrical system, the tools used to analyze it and the organization the operates this utility.
Essential Functions
- Learn and assist in modeling and analyzing the power system.
- Learn and perform power flow, dynamic stability, fault analyses, or economic analysis of the Chugach system and documenting results.
- Review and apply system conditions to system database development.
- Work on projects developed with the intern as directed by the Operations Engineer.

- No regular contact or communication with external individuals or entities.
Competencies
- Must have basic understanding of the operation and theory of an electrical utility system.
- Must have a basic understanding of power system operations and maintenance.
- Must have practical working knowledge of computer software and hardware.
- Must possess the ability to review and apply system conditions to system database development.
- Must possess the ability to meet timelines and schedules and write clear, concise reports.
- Strong verbal communication and team skills are desirable.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
- Most of the work will be performed in a standard office environment but a portion of the work could be in the field in varying weather conditions. Flights in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters are also a possibility.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Education
Completion of Junior-level course work in an accredited undergraduate Electrical Engineering Degree Program, required. Course work with power system emphasis, preferred.
Active enrollment in accredited undergraduate program, required.
- Experience
One (1) year prior work experience in any setting, required. Engineering experience not required.
