Our Company

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a not-for-profit international regulatory authority whose mission is to assure the effective and efficient reduction of risks to the reliability and security of the grid. NERC develops and enforces Reliability Standards; annually assesses seasonal and long-term reliability; monitors the bulk Power System through system awareness; and educates, trains, and certifies industry personnel. NERC’s area of responsibility spans the continental United States, Canada, and the northern portion of Baja California, Mexico. NERC is the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) for North America, subject to oversight by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and provincial authorities in Canada. NERC's jurisdiction includes users, owners, and operators of the bulk Power System, which serves nearly 400 million people.

 

Our Mission

The vision for the ERO Enterprise, which is comprised of NERC and the six Regional Entities, is a highly reliable and secure North American bulk Power System. Our mission is to assure the effective and efficient reduction of risks to the reliability and security of the grid. The mission of the Performance Analysis program is to evaluate reliability performance of the bulk Power System using data provided from NERC registered entities and identify areas of concern regarding trends and risks to the North American electricity industry.

 

Your Impact

The Intern with the Advanced System Analytics & Modeling (ASAM) team will play a pivotal role in providing technical support for critical reliability initiatives within the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO). This role supports conducting Power System modeling, studies, and other engineering analyses for ERO efforts related to mitigating emerging reliability risks in the areas of grid transformation, extreme events, and the energy transition. The successful candidate will actively engage with internal and external stakeholders and support key NERC initiatives. This role reports to the Manager of Advanced System Analytics & Modeling Team.

 

Your Responsibilities and Qualifications

 

Responsibilities

  • Learn and use PSLF/PSSE to conduct Power System reliability studies such as assessing impact of increased levels of BPS -connected inverter-based resources and other emerging risks to the BPS (changes to resource mix, grid transformation, and extreme events).
  • Support the enhancement of frequency response analysis and automation.
  • Engage actively with industry stakeholders to support proactive risk mitigation of emerging key risks to the BPS.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations on key NERC initiatives.

  • Present final report and presentation at the end of the internship to senior

 

Qualifications

  • A junior or senior in an accredited undergraduate program; or attending an accredited graduate school program. Preference will be given to Electrical Engineering students specializing in Power Systems.
  • GPA requirement: 3.5 or higher out of 4.0
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Basic understanding of PSSE, PSLF and Python is preferred.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communications

 

Other

  • Background check will be conducted prior to internship.
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons engaged for internships are required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon internship.
  • The ASAM team is based in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is remote but may be requested to travel to the NERC offices. Reimbursement of travel expenses will be in accordance with the company’s travel and expense reimbursement
  • The candidate will also be asked to take some technical and/or security training, and complete the certificate for that training, as needed.
