The American Heart Association has an internship opportunity in our Houston, TX office for a college student or recent graduate for a hands-on experience in various facets of event planning and implementation. Our internships offer the opportunity to gain professional experience with a national non-profit organization, further develop communication and presentation skills, and experience skills in team collaboration and customer service.

Internship Overview:
  • Time Commitment: 20 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 1/16/24 - 5/3/24
  • Hybrid (includes some remote work, some work time at the office, and some work time at events) Must live in the Houston, TX region
  • Salary: $23 per hour

Internship Outcomes:
Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about program evaluation.
  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriching your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.
  • Gain experience assisting with the logistics and implementation of community events including Heart Walks, Field Days, Go Red for Women, Heart Ball, and Women of Impact.

Responsibilities
Tasks could include things like the following:
  • Assist with the logistics and timeline management for multiple community events including vendor scheduling, inventory and ordering of decorations/signage, supply ordering/tracking, and more.
  • Learn and support invoice coordination and contract processing.
  • Assist in coordinating and communicating with event staff.
  • Working with the team on event volunteer recruitment.
  • Work cohesively with vendors by supporting pre-event communications, managing and organizing vendor databases, and being their point of contact during events.
  • Day of event assistance to the Director of Events.
  • Event photographer booking and management. Tasks include managing shot lists, photo receipts, and organization of bookings.
  • Assistance in all meeting preparation.

Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience preferred in event planning, event management, and post-event management. Experience can include event management for a paid job, previous internship, volunteer work, and/or campus events.
  • Management, implementation, and execution of events ranging from 250 people to 1,000+ people preferred.
  • Effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work professionally with colleagues and professional volunteers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Meeting management and event management including set up, outlook invitations, copies, catering, logistics, and meeting minutes.
  • Knowledge of business letter writing format, style, and protocol.
  • Intermediate use of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic knowledge of Canva is a plus.
  • Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm, with additional weekday evening events, and some weekend events TBD.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection
