Job Description

The New York City Comptroller, an independently elected official, is the Chief Financial Officer of the City of New York. The mission of the office is to promote the financial integrity and operational effectiveness of New York City government, in order to secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. We utilize the tools and responsibilities that the City Charter assigns us to ensure that City government is budgeting wisely, investing strategically, living up to its promises and obligations, and keeping a sharp eye on the long-term challenges to come.

The Bureau of Budget evaluates New York City’s fiscal, cash, and economic position by analyzing revenue collections, expenditures, the capital program, and the condition of the local economy. The Bureau uses its charter-mandated responsibilities to promote transparency and accountability in financial reporting and budgeting. In addition to reviewing and commenting on the City’s Financial Plan and issuing reports on the City’s cash balances and debt capacity, the Bureau oversees an independent actuarial audit to review the assumptions underlying the City’s pension contributions. The Bureau also conducts regular assessments of the City’s economic outlook and revenue performance and strives to lead the dialogue on the City’s fiscal state through reliable and thought-provoking economic and budget research.

Responsibilities of the Economic Research Intern include, but are not limited to:

  • Producing both quantitative and qualitative analyses to further the Office of the Comptroller's economic and revenue forecasting capability.

  • Updating a forecasting model for several key indicators of the NYC economy and projecting the respective impact on a component of the City's tax revenue.

  • Contributing to in-depth exploration of economic trends in New York City as part of the Comptroller's monthly economic newsletter.

By the end of the summer, the Budget Intern will have furthered their skills in econometric analysis, quantitative research and presentation.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT: Matriculation at an accredited college. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in college.

  • Our office is located at the David Dinkins Municipal Building, 1 Centre St. in Manhattan/New York.

  • All interns will work in-person in the office, Monday – Thursday, 28 hours per week.

  • The employment period will be from June 3 – August 1, 2024.

Qualifications

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).

NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
