The Product
Over the past 9 years, Wilson has been developing a data collection system that lives seamlessly inside of an American football. The embedded sensor rapidly records information about the movement of the ball and then interprets that information to generate real-world throw statistics like ball speed, spin rate, spiral efficiency, and release time. These metrics provide an objective look at a QB’s ability to throw a football and illustrate that QB’s areas for potential improvement. Over those years, we have generated an incredible amount of data from QBs at all levels of competition, even including the professional ranks.
The Need
Now that this data has been collected, we need to study, interpret, and empower this data to drive actionable changes in the marketplace. This includes sharing with individual players and teams how they compare to the rest of the country, at their respective level. If a QB wants to improve, where should they focus their efforts? What situations prompt their best throwing performances?
The Project
The core of this internship will revolve around gathering, organizing, and interpreting large collections of throw data. This data may be queried through our active cloud database from current users, as well as compiled through historical collections from previous versions of the connected system. Macro and micro-level trends would then be presented back to the Football group via graphs, summary tables, and more narrative reports. Some additional data collection would be expected, to better reinforce the potential areas of system successes and areas of improvement.
The Opportunity
This area of study offers the candidate the ability to interact with a wealth of data that is tied to the most important single position in all of sports, the Quarterback. They would be able see the data collection in action, take a behind-the-scenes look in how the stats are actually generated, and directly impact the creation of the next generation of this product. This internship provides training in how the R&D team collects objective data to drive product innovation and puts them one step ahead in knowing how to make data actionable.
Applicants should be majoring in the following: Sports Science, Aerospace Eng, Mechanical Eng, Physics, Athlete Eng, Computer Science, Statistics
Qualifications for our candidate will include:
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Basic knowledge of Excel and spreadsheet interpretation
- Working knowledge of an analytics toolkit (i.e. Matlab, Python, R, Tableau, MySQL)
- Summarizing work in concise reports and small-group presentations
