GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Community Resource Intern is a volunteer leader who supports St. Louis Area Foodbank's (SLAFB) Ending Hunger Department. The Community Resource Intern will enhance our ability to provide quality public benefit application assistance and provide support to the Foodbank's broader outreach efforts by supporting Food Fairs, Mobile Markets, and Nutrition Education. The Community Resource Intern will interface with partnering agencies, residents of the 26 counties that the SLAFB serves, and Foodbank staff. The intern may also work with other strategic direction initiatives that the SLAFB is spearheading for growth and success.

RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Provide public benefit assistance to clients via telephone through our Google SNAP Program and additional community referrals.
  • Input public benefit applications into the Oasis database.
  • Research and contact potential new community organizations for outreach, with emphasis on underutilized portions of the SLAFB service territory.
  • Work with Community Resource Coordinators to schedule and attend outreach opportunities for community engagement and public benefit assistance.
  • Collaborate with the Equitable Access team to provide support at community outreach events and food distributions.
  • Work with all Programs staff to complete other duties as assigned.

In Order to gain a full understanding of the Foodbank and our scope of work, intern may volunteer in a variety of program areas including, but not limited to:

  • Community Resource Team as they work in the community.
  • Participate in outreach for nutrition and wellness education in various capacities
  • Participate in Food Bank's Volunteer Center.
  • Food Distributions & Participate in Food on the Move programing in various capacities.
  • School Markets
  • Ride-A-Long with SLAFB Driver
  • Read articles and/or view selected webinars related to food insecurity, food bank programming, and advocacy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Non-profit experience preferred
  • Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with different types of personalities
  • Proficient with Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other web-based applications
  • Broad understanding of evaluation, programs, and logic models
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable transportation and valid licenses.
  • Passion for the Foodbank mission and the ability to demonstrate SLAFB's Core Values: Stewardship, Teamwork, Agility and Respect
  • Must have reliable transportation to work on-site at SLAFB as well as to/from community events. If driving personally owned vehicle, will be required to provide proof of valid drivers license and current insurance.

TIME REQUIREMENTS

Candidates with availability to work a minimum of 20 hours per week for 16 weeks will be given preferred consideration. There is flexibility with this internship, and as an expectation, the Community Resource Intern will work with his/her supervisor to determine a schedule and hours to fulfill academic requirements or personal experience. This is subject to change if an individual needs to increase or decrease total hours of internship. Regularly established schedules will include assigned community events for interns to attend and work.

In depth understanding of local and national hunger and poverty issues.

  • Strong grasp of community and government responses to hunger and poverty.
  • Opportunity to build or strengthen groups facilitation and leadership skills.
  • Skills and knowledge in data collection and development for communities with limited access to food.
  • Opportunity to connect with community members to provide support, compassion, and be able to identify their needs with nutrition education.
