The American Heart Association's Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.

 

In this role, the intern will provide support to the Regional VP of Communications through the development and implementation of communications and marketing assets that promote the Association's strategic priorities and events, with a special emphasis on traditional and non-traditional media relations within the SE market. The intern will assist with social media posts and ad buys and developing communications materials and other tools to inform key audiences about heart disease and stroke. The intern will collaborate with volunteers, leadership, senior management, component staff, news media, outside organizations, and the public for the purpose of enhancing the American Heart Association's public image and managing the flow of communications on traditional and non-traditional platforms with the overall goal of supporting and impacting the strategic fundraising activities of the American Heart Association.

Internship Overview

  • Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 1/16/24-5/3/24
  • Hybrid: Intern must be based in one of the following areas: New Orleans, LA; Jackson, Mississippi; Knoxville, TN; Tampa, FL; or Durham, NC
  • Salary of $23 per hour

Internship Outcomes

Individuals participating in the internship program are provided with an opportunity to:

  • Gain experience in the professional world while learning about developing content based on a brand's positioning, character, and purpose.
  • Complete an internship that enriches your academic and professional resume as well as enriches your personal life by making a difference in the lives of others.
Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

  • Write/distribute communications materials, including materials for traditional and non-traditional media, with a specific focus on advocacy, fundraising, and priority initiatives.
  • Assist with social media posts.
  • Assist with web content.
  • Assist with video and written storytelling.
  • Work with the regional marketing & communications team to determine roles/responsibilities for communications support and provide support, as appropriate.
  • Research and identify diverse media outlets for local markets.
  • Research target audiences for local markets.
  • Develop PowerPoints and Communications reports as required.

Qualifications
  • College/University student (or recently graduated) studying communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or another related field.
  • Sample writing materials are required (please upload these materials as attachments instead of a cover letter, when applying).  Examples can include a Press release, professional storytelling and/or on social media platforms, professional social media content creation, professional newsletter, or blog post.
  • Experience with video production and storytelling a plus.
  • Ability to work as a team member with multiple internal and external constituencies: staff, media, external corporations, and volunteers.
  • An interest in implementing public relations campaigns, pitching to media, writing and/or developing press releases, scripts, social media posts, and other marketing and communications assets.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of news media operations, newsgathering, and technology.
  • Required Equipment: Reliable Wi-Fi Connection.
  • Ability to travel to local meetings and events as required with reliable transportation.
  • Minimum availability of 20-25 hrs./wk.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
