The Civil Engineering Intern position will complete an 8-week long summer project, such as: piloting new technology to identify leaking water from Missoula's water distribution system.
ACivil Engineer Internship position at the City of Missoula will provide college students an opportunity to gain real-world experience in a Montana Public Works & Mobility Department, and to learn and observe the many components of City Engineering and Public Works, including but not limited to the following areas:
- Water distribution system design and maintenance,
- Cutting edge leak detection technology,
- Real world utility construction techniques,
- Ride-a-longs with paving crews or water main leak crews,
- In-the-field data collection techniques,
- GIS web-map creation.

- Complete a summer project, such as: working alongside the Leak Specialist gathering data in the field to identify, quantify, and locate underground water leaks, etc.
- Work alongside Water operators in the field and Engineering staff in the office to gain valuable engineering and construction experience.
- Observe the operations of various Public Works and Mobility Department sections, such as: Streets Operations, Surface Engineering, Development Engineering, Utility Engineering, Transportation Planning, Water, Stormwater and Sewer Operations.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
- Knowledge of civil construction techniques, methods, practices, and tools, including utility main installation, sidewalk, curb, and gutter construction.
- Knowledge of, and ability to learn and promote, department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines.
- Skill in organization, time management, and the ability to prioritize tasks with shifting priorities and timeline demands.
- Skill in utilizing computers, various software, and databases, including Microsoft 365, drafting programs, data collection and GIS mapping systems, with the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.
- Skill in reporting and analyzing data.
- Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
- Ability to safely operate various tools, vehicles, and other job specific equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written policies, procedures, and instructions.
- Proven ability to participate in a customer focused and team-oriented environment.
- Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula policies, practices, and procedures, including the ability to understand and interpret state and local government regulatory processes.
- Work environment may involve exposure to unavoidable weather conditions, occupational hazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, including uneven terrain, loud noises, high traffic areas, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Must be working toward a BS or MS in Civil Engineering, or another relevant field and have completed sophomore year in this field of study.
- Must have a valid Montana driver's license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
- Experience with ArcGIS, preferred.
