Intern - Body Exterior, Interior & Closures Hardware Engineering

The Body Exteriors, Interiors, Closures Hardware Engineering Intern will be responsible for assisting the engineering team with activities related to design, development and release of automotive exterior, interior and Closures Hardware systems and components. This intern will have an opportunity to be engaged with the following subsystems & components depending on the team's needs at a given time and the individual candidate's level of knowledge and experience:

Exteriors: Cowl screen, windshield washing & wiper system, exterior lighting, glass, front and rear bumper fascia, front grille, rear spoiler, rocker cover, engine cover, badges & emblems, grille opening reinforcement (GOR), energy absorbing systems.

Interiors: Seats, Instrument Panel & Cockpit, Trim panels, center & floor console, overhead system, Carpeting and acoustic systems.

Closures Hardware: Hardware for doors, hood and decklid, Fender and decklid panels, exterior mirrors, body seals Engineering Intern will work with the DREs supervision. Can work proactively on their own initiative.


Must be eligible to work up to 40 hours per week during the June - September time frame.

Responsibilities (included, but are not limited to):

  • Maintain an open issues list relevant to the assigned projects. Track, manage and ensure timely resolution of the open issues.
  • Maintain a project timing plan/schedule for the assigned projects.
  • Participate in relevant review meetings under the supervision of the Sr./lead DRE and/or the engineering module lead.
  • Communicate & escalate issues & findings to the DREs and the head of the respective engineering group.
  • Depending on the level of experience and technical knowledge, the engineering intern may be given the opportunity to:
    • Create and update engineering documentation such as TES's (Tech. Spec's), DFMEA's (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and DVP's (Design Verification Plan).
    • Create and manage EBOM (Engineering Bill of Materials), suggest material selection and finish.
    • Under the guidance of a lead or senior DRE participate in activities toward verification of styling theme feasibility (manufacturing, service, safety, regulatory etc.).
    • Assist with quality improvement projects & initiatives.
    • Coordinate testing and validation activities and provide reports.
    • Conduct vehicle benchmark studies / technical research of competitive products, present findings and suggest recommendations.
    • Support CP, PV & production vehicle build phases as an engineering representative at the assembly plant and assist with resolution of build issues.
    • Co-ordinate and complete mock-up of parts for evaluation.
    • Assist with design, development, and engineering of the applicable commodity.
    • Initiate, track, manage and close engineering change requests (CR's) within Karma Automotive's change management system.
    • Track, assist and manage supplier(s) activities and their progress to achieve goals.
    • Provide weekly updates of progress, goals, and roadblocks.
    • Develop performance and technical specifications for automotive exterior systems.
    • Develop, track and update vehicle level specifications for exterior components.

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Plastics & Composites Engineering, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Good analytical skills and detail oriented.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience working in product development industry is preferred
  • Knowledge of plastics, composites, and metals is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Injection Molding, Blow Molding ?is a plus.
  • Knowledge of RIM (Reaction Injection Molding), stamping, casting is a plus.
  • Experience with CATIA V5 or equivalent CAD software is a plus.
  • Experience or knowledge of root cause analysis or Design of Experiments is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Design Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (DFMEA) is a plus.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working knowledge of JIRA is a plus.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally to achieve goals.

Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing their job in an indoor office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may spend 100% (excluding breaks and meal periods) of time in an office environment.

Compensation:
$25/per hour - $35/per hour. Compensation will vary depending on the candidate's current level of education.
