Job Responsibilities:
Under general supervision operates, maintains, calibrates electronic, electromechanical, and mechanical laboratory instruments.
  • Schedule and perform routine preventative maintenance and calibration services.
  • Coordinate and perform unscheduled corrective maintenance.
  • Generate and maintain all equipment maintenance records utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and distributes them to the supervisors to ensure DHEC's compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Train less experienced staff and advise supervisors with selecting new instrumentation when necessary.
  • Create and maintain a milage/maintenance spreadsheet for Laboratory Vehicles.
  • Provide billing for services rendered to outside agencies utilizing the "Standard Invoice and Payment System" and filing travel forms for reimbursement.
  • Must be able to travel overnight for a period of up to four nights a week.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area.
Agency Additional Requirements:
  • A good mechanical aptitude and the ability to operate all types of mechanical hand and power tools.
  • Be able to read and understand electronic schematics and circuit diagrams.
  • Communicate effectively with the general public and staff members.
  • Ability to wear protective clothing.
  • Have vision corrective to 20/40 and not colorblind.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds to a height of 36 inches.
  • Able to bend, stand or sit for a long period of time.
  • Must be able to travel overnight for a period of up to four nights a week.

This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Environmental Control's Public Health Laboratory. The work performed supports DHEC's mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Public Health created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Public Health to assume the public health-related functions of DHEC.
