Instrument Manager and Laboratory Support Coordinator, Department of Chemistry
Job Description Summary
The Haverford College Department of Chemistry invites applications to its available full time, exempt, benefit eligible Instrument Manager and Laboratory Support Coordinator position. In this essential role, the successful candidate will work closely with undergraduate students, staff and faculty to ensure instruments and equipment can be used effectively for training within our courses and for innovative independent research projects. Applicants with demonstrated potential to work with instrumentation and equipment, as well as strong communication skills and a clear commitment to inclusion and diversity, are especially encouraged to apply. There will be opportunities to receive training as needed on any instruments with which the candidate is not yet familiar. Further, the Department will work alongside the candidate to provide additional professional development opportunities related to the responsibilities of the position that would support growth and success in the successful candidate's work.
Job Description
Essential Functions & Primary Responsibilities:
The major responsibilities of the Instrument Manager and Laboratory Support Coordinator include 1) developing, executing and providing oversight of instrumentation maintenance and repair, 2) working alongside undergraduate students as they learn new instrumentation methods, collect data, troubleshoot, and conduct analyses related to their coursework and research, 3) collaborating with faculty on instrumentation use and needs for research and pedagogical purposes, 4) maintaining lab and instrument safety, and 5) Contributing to creating an inclusive learning environment. Our Departmental instrumentation includes, but is not limited to, high field NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectrometers, LC-MS, GC, GC-MS, and HPLC instrumentation. There will be training opportunities available for the use and maintenance of instrumentation as needed. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Engaging with a diverse student population in learning new instrumentation methods, collecting data, troubleshooting, and conducting analyses.
  • Conducting the inspection and preventative maintenance of instrumentation and equipment, as well as minor repairs.
  • Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions with the support of the Department and external resources.
  • Liaising with other departments within the College as well as external service representatives.
  • Partnering with faculty and staff to enable safe and effective use of instruments and equipment in laboratory-based courses.
  • Developing training protocols with the support of the Department
  • Training of users in proper and safe use of instruments
  • Supporting the acquisition, analysis, and maintenance of data
  • Maintaining lab and instrument safety
  • Contributing to creating an inclusive learning environment.
  • Writing and updating documentation for performance of essential and repeated maintenance tasks, and training other community members on these regular maintenance steps as needed.
  • Maintaining maintenance logs and adequate operational protocols for each instrument.
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff to plan maintenance and replacement cycles for instruments and equipment.

Line of Report:
Chair of the Chemistry Department, with regular consultation with KINSC support staff, organized by the Stockroom manager.
Education, Training, & Experience:
1. A completed Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
2. Some knowledge of and experience with electronics and electronic devices
3. Some knowledge of and experience with computers and scientific software
4. Willingness and eagerness to learn and continue training as appropriate

  • Driving (operating a motor vehicle, crane, tractor, forklift, etc.): Never
