About this opportunity:
Cenovus Energy is currently seeking an Instrumentation Engineer to serve as a member of the Superior Refinery Instrument and Electrical Engineering Team. This role will support the delivery of safe, environmentally sound, cost-effective, and reliable unit operations. In this role, you will apply innovative technologies in the monitoring, evaluation, maintenance, repair, selection, and upgrading of instrumentation and instrument standards to enhance unit availability and performance. The Instrument Engineer will work with other engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel, as well as industry experts, in both project and day-to-day support roles.

Responsibilities:
  • Problem Solving by analysis of data and troubleshooting to systematically determine the root cause(s) of a problem and identify the best course of action to prevent re-occurrence
  • Ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences to optimize or detect abnormal conditions within the process
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks & responsibilities to support the organization
  • Assist in HAZOPs, MOC's, Incident Investigations, PSSRs and Job Safety Analysis
  • Assists in planning and execution of Turnaround instrument activities
  • Leads root cause failure investigations for instrument equipment related incidents
  • Strong teamwork, technical and communication skills
  • Experience with control valve and flow meter sizing and selection
  • Knowledge of thermowell wake frequency analysis as it applies to ASME PTC 19.3 TW
  • Experience with P&IDs, instrument datasheets, loop drawings, electrical schematic drawings, logic diagrams and panel schedules
  • Technical knowledge of instrument design, specification, documentation, installation and maintenance for level, pressure, temperature, and flow instrumentation
  • Support reliability engineer with root cause analysis for instrument failures meeting the defined thresholds.
  • Provide input to maintenance to optimize PM / PDM strategies.
  • Provide analysis on repeatable instrumentation failures and develop corrective actions.
  • Technical reviewer of Management of Change for instrument aspects.
  • Utilize SAP to manage the predictive / preventative maintenance system.
  • Manage and drive the plant instrument mechanical integrity program. Ensure compliance to corporate instrumentation and process safety standard work practices.
  • Provide technical support to Instrumentation Maintenance Planner
  • Provides project support.
    • IFR, IFA and IFC design reviews
    • Constructability
    • Start up and commissioning plans.
  • Front End Development for instrumentation specific projects

Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 10 years in Instrument Engineering or related experience in a chemical plant, refinery, or equivalent environment with an engineering degree
  • Experience supporting maintenance, reliability, or process organizations
  • Engineering skills in troubleshooting/specifying instruments, with knowledge of connectivity to DCS, PLC and/or SIS equipment, associated with process equipment i.e. pumps, heat exchangers, vessels, compressors, piping
  • Successful candidate must be able to acquire a TWIC card

Preferred Qualifications:
  • SIS certification (e.g. TUV or ISA/IEC 61511)
  • Analyzer knowledge of TDL's, gas chromatography, physical properties and water quality measurements, CEMS systems and communication protocols desirable
